Hi ladies,

As a graduation gift, I want to get myself something with an amethyst....a cocktail ring or perhaps a pendant. I want somethig moderately big (I suppose 3-4 carats, I have nothing to compare the size with since I''ve never seen a stone that big!). I''m so new with coloured gemstones and I have no idea what or where to look. I''d love if anyone can direct me to some nice, reasonably priced stones. I''m open to both, loose as well as set stones.

Thanks so much!

i just had finewatergems, you can google them, custom cut a cushion amethyst for me that measures 7x7mm and is 1.5ish carats. i think they can pretty much do anything you want. i'm having it set into a semi mount from lord of the gem rings on ebay. the stone was 100 and the ring was 300 after customizing some things. it should be ready to go in about 2-3 weeks! from what i learned searching for an amethyst myself just a few weeks ago, they are pretty easy to come by when you contact the right people. good luck!

love the avatar btw, pbj time all the way!

Thanks so much, Asscherhalo_lover and Chrono! From the sites recommended, I found these two that I like. But they''re from different sources, so how can I make sure it''s similar in colour/hue? I know that no two stones can be exactly the same, but I''d like them to be at least somewhat similar. Here are the two I''m in love with:

Earrings
Pendant

What do you guys think?

I have one more question: if I buy a semi-mount from Ebay, I would need to give it to a jeweler to mount it for me, right? How much does that typically cost?

That depends on the jeweller. It also depends on the size of the stone and the type of gemstone. I''ve been paying around $50 per stone, generally.

That ACS trilliant looks super dark. This would be my recommendation:
Earrings http://www.acstones.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=18&idproduct=2518
Pendant http://www.acstones.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=18&idproduct=2503
Both have similiar colour and that desired red blue flash.
You''re right. The earrings are much lighter. I really like the ones you posted - except for the shape. I''m not a big fan of brilliant, and I wanted a funkier shape. I guess I''ll just keep my eyes open to see if I can find anything that either matches the earrings or the pendant.

Also, 50$ seems reasonable for mounting. I''ll ask my jeweler the next time I see him.

Thanks so much for all your help :)

If you really like the trilliant, write Gary an email and ask him to find you a matching trilliant pendant to that pair of earrings. He can find such things easily for you.

Thanks for the suggestion! I just sent him an e-mail...let''s see what he says. I have my fingers crossed. I''ll post here with any updates :)

I just found this: Stone for pendant

Would this go with these earrings ?
The tone is different. The earrings are dark toned, the pendant is medium.
The cutting style also appears slightly different even though both are checkerboard cut.
How "matchy-matchy" are you?

I got a response from Gary, and he said he didn''t have any pendants in checkboard cut. However, he said he has earrings and a pendant in a regular brilliant cut. I dont know the difference between the two cuts - should I just go with the regular brilliant?

Also, what size pendant should I get?

Thanks for your help Chrono!

As for the matchy response, I''d like them to be as close as possible.

Ahh, I much prefer the regular brilliant. Are 5.5mm for the earrings and 7.5mm for the pendant too small? Maybe I can go up by a mm? I want to get a thin row of pave stones around the stone.

Depends on your personal tolerance level. At first I liked 5 mm stones, over time, I preferred 6 mm, and now I like 7 mm for earrings.

If you are adding a pave halo, then 6 mm or so is fine.

Okay, so I''ll ask for 6mm for earrings and 8.5mm for the pendant. That should be enough difference between the two...I think!

This one is a beauty from finewater gems....
