I can''t change my name in my province (

), but ever since I''ve seen the wonderful monograms you ladies can make I''ve been dying for one... Can I get a momgram even if I''m not changing my last name? Would you think it''s weird? Or maybe I can get a monogram with just our first name initials... What do you think?

If anyone wants to make me one, our initials are R (me) and J (him) and his last name starts with G. We are having a semi-formal morning wedding where simplicity is key and our flowers are white and yellow daisies. This is the closest I could find in terms of colour samples to show our colour scheme.

Thanks!

Anyone?

im no good at making monograms..but i dont see why you can''t do one with your first names. i think it would still look great!

Dumb question, how come you can''t change your last name?

Anchor, I''ll try and do some this week. There are lots of talented ladies on here who can help, I''m sure.

Do you want something fancy, or more romanesque?

Here''s somethin''- not sure if your daisies have pointed or rounded ends, but it''s an idea.

I think most couples who both keep their names get a monogram that looks something like

RX * JG

It would be much fancier, of course, and it''s meant to be a centered dot rather than an asterisk. Since you didn''t say what your last name started with, I just used an "X" as a substitute

I wish I had a better representation, but you can get the idea from here. I''m not planning on ever changing my name, so I''ve already decided that I''ll someday be getting a monogram like this!

I''m also curious as to why you aren''t allowed to change your name if you want to...it''s a local rule?

I can''t do monograms, but I wanted to say I love your color scheme.

Oh--and after reading your post I just realized that if FI and I were to do a monogram it would be:

HOL

As in HOLE! That is soooooo not happening. Waaaaaa--we have a bad monogram! Anyway, I can''t wait to see what our lovely PSers come up with for you!

Hi anchor,

I love playing with monograms, I''ll see what I can come up with. It might take me a bit, but I''ll work on it

From Justice Québec: Both spouses keep their birth names after marriage and continue to exercise their civil rights under that name, i.e. they must use their birth name in contracts, on credit cards, on their driver''s licence, etc. However, women are free however to assume their husband''s name socially. Women married before April 2, 1981 who already use their husband''s last name to exercise their civil rights may continue to do so.

So, I can use my "married name" socially, but legally and officially, I am obligated to keep my "maiden name". Which sucks, because my hubby-to-be has a simple, common French-Canadian name, and I am stuck with an hyphenized name (momsmaidenname-dadslastname) with the first part that I always have to spell because while it''s still French, it''s super rare.

There was a Civic Code reform in Qc in 1981. Common-law and same-sex marriages became legal, children could now be given hyphenized last names, etc. Also, the priviledge of taking a married name was taken away. Apparently, this was introduced to "reflect in the marriage the equality between the man and the woman".

Personally, I''d rather have the choice and take the decision for myself... I don''t want to change my name because I''m becoming my husband''s property, but because I don''t want to have to do like my parents did and plague a poor child with a super long hyphenized name, and it SUCKS that I will be the only one in my family with a different last name.

I guess romanesque would be good... I''m trying to stay away from fancy. Thanks, TG!

I''m pretty sure they''ll have rounded ends, but that is lovely, and cuteness incarnate! Which is exactly what I''m trying to go for. Thanks!

I did some research and explain the legal stuff in my reply to ktkakes (and included an rant...

). As I mentioned in that reply, I have an hyphenized last name (silly parents

), so my initials are RPF. So, while it''s a great idea, I think it''d be difficult to pull of a cute, not too heavy or formal monogram with that.

Thank you! For someone who''s usually not very good with colour matching, I think I did pretty well. Of course, I had help!

Would it be really that bad for your monogram, especially with the O bigger than the 2 other letters? I''m not a very visual person, so I''m having a hard tisme picturing what it would look like.

Ahh, gotcha. I didn''t realized you had a hyphenated name...and I think I misread your question! I thought you were looking for suggestions of how to create a monogram with both of your sets of initials, but now, reading the replies and your original post again, I don''t think that was your question. Sorry!

Do you think you might use his name socially, or even just not mind if people refer to you as "Mrs. G" even though it''s not your legal name? In that case, I think a traditional monogram would still be fine, as well as your first initials if you prefer that. If I remember correctly, I saw a photo of Averil Lavigne''s reception in some magazine and she had everything done with her husband''s last name...not that she''s necessarily the best example, but it just came to mind as someone who still uses her own name but had a very traditional monogram at the wedding. And I''m sure that you''ll be able to come up with something much cuter!

Oh, I will undoubtedly go by "Mrs. G" socially. I have an aunt who kept her name for legal stuff and goes by "Mrs. Uncleslastname", and I didn''t even know until recently that she had never legally changed her name. Still, I''m pretty bummed that my letters will be addressed to "Mrs PF" (and I''ll still have to write that bothersome signature...) and plain out pissed off that everyone in the family will have the same name except me.

So you don''t thing it would be weird if we had a RGJ monogram? I like the R*J idea, so that might work too.

Hm. I just read that if we moved out of Qc to another province (which we are considering), it''d be super easy for me to change my name... That thought cheers me up considerably!

Yay. thats a good thing, i mean if you guys had planned on moving anyway you would be able to take your hubby''s name! thank you for filling me in on why you cant change your name. i wish you all the best on your wedding. you deserve to have everything you want !

Anchor, I think that you should go with whatever feels right to you, and if people think it''s "weird" that you have a traditional monogram but still technically have your maiden name, then it''s their problem! I tried to work on one for you, but I''m no good at it
7.gif
I hope you get one soon!

So, it took me a REALLY long time to get back to you, but I finally worked something up...

oh man! sorry it''s so big!!!

OMG, happy in love! That''s so neat looking! It''s beautiful and certainly wedding-like, but it''s so versatile... it can be used on the invitations, the program, the favors, etc....

Nice work! I might poke you soon to help me with my monogram

Hey gally...

Sorry it took me so long. But I am good for my promises. Here's a crack, just for fun! I know it's not your exact colors, but I didn't try overly hard to match...
