Can platinum polishing be fixed?

Hi all,

I purchased this ring - an Art Deco platinum OMC…at some point, someone did a pretty poor job on the polishing, on the shank (polishing scratches, not smooth) and I think maybe the gallery (engraving isn’t as clear). Is it possible for someone who knows what they’re doing to fix it?

Thanks!!51695889-3743-42AF-B3F4-36669C924990.jpeg48363020-BF2A-4843-BBFB-20A35B74FCE2.jpeg

You could definitely get engraving tidied up! It would need to be engraved again, as a polish wouldn’t restore the wear

David klass and Sako (cicada jewelry on Instagram) do impeccable engraving and could definitely bring this back to glory!

Does anyone have any before and after restoration pics from either DK or Sako? Thank you!

@Cerulean - have you used either DK or Sako for restoration? If so, any pictures? Thank you so much!

I haven’t, but there are tons of examples of restored pieces on Sako’s Instagram- I know @lovedogs got a very special piece restored

David klass just had a really wonderful engraver, who I think has the skills to help. I’d look at his Instagram too, but he doesn’t have before and after or anything like that:

I haven't gotten anything restored from Sako, though I did contact him to ask about the potential in the future. I'm having DK resize a family ring, but cant really speak to anything with platinum since the ring I have is yellow gold

Oh, I am so sorry! I thought Sako restored the engraving on a sterling ring you had...I must be mixing you up with someone else!

Not me, but no worries! I've heard amazing things about sako

To swing back to the original question in the title, the answer is most of the time.
If its a bad casting no amount of polishing is going to make it look good.

The same can be true with hand-forged with some alloys if they are handled wrong in manufacturing but its rare.

The other case and more common is a lot of deep damage to the setting that is to deep to polish out or there is not enough metal left to work with.

@Karl_K very insightful, thank you!

It’s back on its way to me! David Klass resized it, polished the band and retouched the milgrain! 563DCAE2-6408-4D86-98DE-F76DDA18D31F.jpeg

Did they do anything about the engraving on the sides of the gallery areas?

@tyty333 No, he said they couldn’t do anything about the engraving:-( he added back in some of the milgrain right above the engraving, though really hard to know exactly what it looked like when it was originally made. The super close up pictures always look so “crazy” to me. 1E5B567A-D7C4-4A11-977E-8D0425F5855A.jpeg

Just have to say DKs speed and response time was absolutely amazing!

Well, it does look a whole lot better on the sides! In your first picture, it looks like the engraving had almost been polished flat
except for the deepest of creases. The rework DK did makes it look close to normal again! I think they did a great job...I
would be pleased!

Yes!! He said they didn’t touch the engraving, but adding the milgrain gave it definition! Whoever polished it previously was not a pro, but I still think it’s a great little Art Deco ring.
