Hey all

I have been on a hunt to get a Ruby ring for a while. Not much luck so far. I recently saw this on Etsy and really like it..what do you guys think? Is it worth the 15k tag?

It's 3 carat, I like the cut..color could be more red than pink but I am not able to find much that I like with right cut ..

I too would love an amazing red ruby. Others will know better if the pricing is appropriate but personally it's too pink for my taste and a big part of the ruby looks milky and faded. Also be aware that based on the dimensions, it'll look like a 2ct diamond.

Thanks a lot, mintbark for your reply.
Yeah I wish it was more red. But I am unable to really find anything I really like or feel is genuine, even after raising my budget from 5k to 15k. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

What is your ideal color? About what carat range are you hoping for? Do you have a preferece on the shape of the stone? Do you like secondhand/antique or more modern style? Are you open to sourcing a ruby first and embarking on a custom project? Is heat-treatment acceptable? I'm sure the experts here can help narrow down some good options for you with a 15k budget.

I really like red (more than pink). Hoping for 2-3 carat at 15k range (if possible). I really like the cushion cut shape. Absolutely not into oval or circular shape. A design like earlier posted would be really nice for me (don't care for the added diamonds though). I am open to sourcing and was suggested gemfix.com earlier. But when I showed it to a local jeweler he kinda discouraged me from buying online (also stating that GIA certificates can be easily bought). Due to covid situation, I am unable to hunt around physically at the moment. And looks like my options are extremely limited online. Thanks for your reply

Heated, but :kiss2::kiss2::kiss2:

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't like the oval shape much plus its heated. From my reading here, heating should be highly avoided. Appreciate the post though.

Not easily, or quickly, in that size or shape. For the price range you may be more likely to find 2-3cts heated or 1-2.5cts unheated if vintage.
With patience you will find the one for you. These are what I could dig up that meet some of the criteria...

You could also ask Nabati if they have any other cushion rubies loose, they may have what you're looking for. They look like they have a few to choose from. https://www.instagram.com/p/CXJbOQPOeQw/
Don't give up and don't get discouraged! You'll find it, it's just really common that it takes some time.

I feel like the color MUST appear more red in real life because this stone has been graded as "pigeon blood red" by Lotus.

Gemfix is recommended, and no, I would bet my life on it that he didn’t “buy” a gia certificate. Your local jeweler is obviously biased. (Though in general, buyer beware).

diamonds by Lauren has this one (and another similar) and can make you the ring (excellent bench).

Thank you all for great suggestions, will go over these. Your inputs are greatly appreciated

Then I think with 15k you won’t go very far, especially if you need 2-3 ct.

If you want really good specs, as you should given that you want to spend that kind of money, Mozambique rubies might work, just about 2ct with that budget excl. setting etc. You might even need to cash out a bit more,.

If you need Burma unheated, that will barely get you to the carat mark - talking about top quality of course.

my advice: ask Inken

Who is inken?

By the way, from what I have seen so far, I am debating between these two, going a bit outside my current budget of 15k. Would have definitely like an emerald cut more but like the colors of these two so far:

Second one looks a bit darker but maybe it's just the lighting?

Any suggestions on which one to better?

Thanks a lot to all for your constant help

I don’t wanna be a downer but I don’t like either of those personally. The first one, (while it still is really nice and a pretty gem) most of the weight seems to be in the belly so it faces up kind of small. The second is even worst with visible inclusions, dark color, striped color zoning, a bad cut and an obvious window.

With your kind of budget, I’d wait and find someone going ti the Tucson gem show. Give them your specs and let them hunt for you. It’s only a couple months away.

I’ve never worked with Gemfix only because I only have so much money lol. I would work with him— I just haven’t so far.

I do know that David at diamonds by Lauren is VERY approachable and if you call him (or email him), he will talk with you. Ask about the window on the round and get more photos in different lighting. Also, you can tell him what you want and he can source it.

I have done this with other vendors and for my yellow sapphire, Gary at Finewater gems took about a year (the before times) to find what I wanted. I was willing to wait. Gary I don’t think does emeralds and Rubys… I have never seen many (if at all) on his website.

Oh, also check Ivy and Rose in Chicago. Ilya sometimes hits on a fantastic deal on a colored stone.

OP, idk where you live, but AJs in Bangkok is having 15% off. I bought my sapphire studs from them, but I was fairly sure they were going to work (turned out to be a perfect match) and they werent that expensive compared to your price point. They came in a few days— very speedy shipping considering. I have no idea what I would have done had I needed to return them, but I did extensively email them and show pics of my ring, so we could get as close a match as possible, etc.

oh, I have also used Inken to source my emerald (which is unset still…)

Inken: https://www.etsy.com/shop/EnhoerningJewelry

she likely has more…. You would need to email her and see what she has and if she can source anything for you. She sourced my emerald at a jewelry show and kept me updated by texts and sent me pics of my choices.

Inken’s website: https://www.enhoerning-jewelry.com/

The one from Gemfix is not fully saturated in my opinion

the Burmese round has all sorts of problems

ask Inken what you want, she will guide you and might source the perfect stone for you

This is one of those orangey red rubies with lots of iron and no fluorescence. They don’t have the ruby magic and should be priced accordingly - I bough one at 2.5 carats from Gem keepers for 8k. Thought it was an absolute bargain until I saw it. Loupe clean, but too much orange despite GRS’ vivid red. I ended up returning it after some convincing with the store owner that the stone was nothing like the pictures on the website.

Stellamaris has awesome stuff and I would inquire about it, but be aware of the lack of fluorescence, it is one of the features that makes rubies so desirable

It just doesn’t look like a ruby to me. Interesting stone, sure. Ruby, no.
