Can this spinel be recut?

I purchased a spinel (2.08ct, 7.48mm x 5.07) however the way the culet is cut detracts from the gems sparkliness lol.

Before I return the stone to the vendor, could it be recut? Or would I lose too much of the diameter?

This is the vendor pic and should give you an idea of the current cut, sorry I couldn't get a better pic.

Your advice would be much appreciated :)

The actual window is quite small (the picture shows a window tilt too which is normal); does it appear to “close up” or become less visible in a temporary setting (or when placed on the back of your hand)? If so, then I’d leave the stone alone rather than recut if you really like it. Does the vendor have a pavilion view of the stone? I think you may have enough depth that a lapidary is able to just adjust the last 2 or so tiers of the pavilion to close the window but you will most likely fall below the 2 carat mark after he/she is done.

It could be difficult to find someone to recut the stone. If recut it may lose some color, and will definitely lose some weight. Have you tried some different settings to see if they can close the window up some?

Chrono is exactly right. Almost any stone can be recut however the weight reduction and possible reduction in color have to be considered with each individual stone.

Without knowing the dimensions, it's impossible to say how much diameter you might lose. If the stone is relatively deep you'll lose weight but not face-up size. If you're not concerned about meetpoint on the pavillion, sometimes just a simple cutting of a pavillion tier can close the window nicely without changing the diameter at all.

I refer to these exercises as defenstration :-) Yes, I know it means to throw out the window, but I'm throwing the window out!

Thanks for the replies and advice :)

I have decided to send the stone back because I'm quite OCD about symmetry and I think this stone would need a complete recut to meet my fussy standards lol I would probably lose too much diameter in the process.

If you are a cut nut, it might be better for you to only shop for stones cut by American precision lapidaries so you’ll get exactly what you want without the need to mess around with them later which will affect price, value, size, colour and etc.

From the single picture (which means I am just running on 2d), it also looked like the pavilion was off center. So it may have been even more of a blah with your refined tastes =) (I have the same tastes)
