My boyfriend is Canadian and lives in Toronto. I will be moving up from the US in February to live there with him

We''ve already purchased my ER and WB (and I get the ER next Friday when he comes down for US Thanksgiving!), but every time I bring up the issue of shopping for HIS wedding band, he tells me that "Canadian men don''t wear wedding bands." He cites his father and grandfather as evidence of this. Now, the few Canadian friends that we have who are married all live in the US, so he claims that they only wear them because they live in the US. I SWEAR I''ve seen plenty of guys walking around Toronto with wedding rings and I think my boyfriend is giving me some stupid story.

I really want him to wear one, in fact I''d be sad if he didn''t. Is it really that uncommon in Canada for guys to wear wedding bands? I hope you Canadian ladies can answer this one for me.

I''m Canadian, and I see plenty of men wearing wedding rings. My father doesn''t wear it often because of his work, but he does wear it occasionally. I''d really appreciate that my boyfriend wears one too when we get married, and I''m pretty sure he wants to.

Then again, I live in the province of Québec (yup, I''m a Frenchie

), so it might be different in Ontario. My mother''s family lives in the Ottawa region, but I never really noticed.

Congrats on your engagement and on soon becoming a fellow Canadian!

Hi Hamster:

Canadian men are no different than American men (Ontario included) when it comes to wedding bands.

Perhaps your boyfriend is confusing his family tradition with Canadian tradition to get his way!?

If you tell him how much it means to you for him to wear a wedding band perhaps he will relent.

Good luck and best wishes to you both.

Heather

I''ve never once heard that Canadian men don''t wear bands.. (I''m obviously Canadian..hehe)
My father wore his for a long long time, till the band snapped due to the work he had to do etc.
Most men that I come accross wear their rings, and the ones who don''t.. are generally not married.
I live on the East Coast though, so who knows..haha

Hey Hamster!

I'm Canadian (from Montreal Quebec) Here most married men where their wedding bands, and even men living together in committed relationships wear them!!!

My boy is all excited to get a wedding band... BUT I don't want him to wear one because:

a) He works with his hands sometimes and can be very dangerous (does this apply to your fiance?)
b) I don't like jewelry on men

Hope that helps.

My husband is Canadian and he NEVER takes off his WB.

This isn''t Canada-specific, but...my boyfriend doesn''t like the idea of wearing a wedding band either, since he has never worn a ring before and thinks it will be really irritating. He knows how much it means to me though, so he agreed to wear it for one year after we get married and then, depending on if it still bothers him or not after that long, he may or may not continue to wear it later. I figure even if you don''t like the feel of a ring on your finger, or the look of one, you''ll probably get used to it after a year, so I''m hoping he relents eventually.

Maybe you could ask him to do some sort of compromise like that?

Hi Ally!

He doesn''t work with his hands much at work (he has an office job) but he''s the type of guy that would hang out in the garage making furniture with his dad on the weekends. I can see that if you are doing a lot of hands on stuff that it would be a bad idea to wear a ring (same for girls), so I wouldn''t expect him to wear it 100% of the time, maybe just at work and when we go out. I also don''t really like jewelry on men, unless its a wedding band

(I REALLY don''t like when guys where necklaces and bracelets or really big rings). My boyfriend does where his school ring all the time though, so he doesn''t have the excuse that it would be uncomfortable, hard to get used to, etc. In fact, I HATE his school ring, mostly because its obviously not high quality gold and the "stone" is some kind of plasticy thing. I also think 32 year old guys should stop wearing their school rings

It seems like it is pretty common in Canada to wear a wedding band though, so I will have to point this out to him!

Hamster,

Well future Canada resident (welcome of course
35.gif
) If he wears his school ring, then you can point that out, because wedding/committement bands are more the norm in Montreal then the exception. Actually in Quebec it's really becoming a trend that men get a band when they are engaged! So if anything, it's gone up in Montreal.

Funny thing actually, yesturday my boyfriend talked to his friend who just got engaged (and got a wedding band for the engagement) and my boyfriend said to me "Where's my ring?" He's using this against me as a sign that I'm not committed to the idea of getting married

. So yes, Canadian men DEFINTELY= wedding band. Ask if he minds if you don't wear your e-ring one day when you go out for a girls night out (I know it will be painful) but I think he'll get the message

PS Can't wait for pics of your e-ring!
