I am Canadian looking to sell my EGD, I was wondering if any other Canadian has sold something internationally, and what methods were used for payment etc.

Thank you!

I used Paypal. I won’t sell internationally again. You need to complete Customs forms, declare the value and pay for insurance. The shipping is very expensive.

I plan to consign my things through local estate jeweler or estate auction.

I was actually talking about that today, could cost 3-500$

Where abouts are you? I'm in Toronto for school, but from Ottawa. Commute back and forth.

I'm curious to know how you insure jewelry for international shipping, @breanne.

@breanne -- have you confirmed there are no exceptions/limitations in insurance coverage for jewelry/diamonds/gemstones in the Canadian major shipping companies?

In the US, for example, to my knowledge neither FedEx nor UPS offer insurance coverage to consumers shipping jewelry/diamonds, and USPS has different rules/exceptions/limitations depending on destination country. For some countries, USPS requires jewelry/stones to be shipped only by international registered mail which limits insurance liability to something like $48.00! Sometimes people pay for insurance coverage and ship the item, but if they had to make a loss claim to the shipper, their claim would be denied if the item shipped was an exception....

Anyway, good luck with your listing/sale!

Yes, that's how I unfortunately found out the cost. I also have it insured with jewelers mutual.

Your finding confirms my experience, that one needs to have third-party insurance to ship from Canada. The major couriers have very low limits, and at one point I was told that Canada Post didn't ship jewelry at all.

Best wishes for a speedy sale!

You are living/commuting between/in two big markets. Have you not considered selling with estate vendors locally ? Lots of options.

I’d be open to that, I don’t know much about it to be honest. It would seem simpler with all the additional fees required.

How/where do I look into that?

There's so many options! Dupuis, Van Rijk Estate Jewellers or Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers come to mind. Try searching "Estate Jewellers" and your city.

Get an independent appraisal first. I use Gem Lab in Toronto.

I actually have an appraisal from gem lab!

So I will definitely look into what you suggested !

Thank you greatly! I will certainly poke around tomorrow at these options.

How does it normally work with these types of places? You inquire if they wish to purchase?

For example, Dupuis has a "request online quote" option on their contact page as does Oliver's Jewellery. I would think most estate vendors have this format.

Good luck!

Thank you greatly! I did just put in a "request online."

Have you ever worked with The Diamond Shopper? That is who will be bringing in my stones! Hopefully in a couple weeks when I'm done exams :D
