has anyone seen one? :| cushion, ascher, princess whatever

i didn't check the last link but almost all the links in the 'sites selling colored gemstones' topic, ebay and google. most sites don't have much choice though

Email a few and see if they have rough to cut for you, that's what I'd do!

I saw some 5mm square amethyst on the Gemselect website. You might check ajsgems as well.

thanks all!

but i am very specific about the color, so do you know beforehand how the cut stone will be like when you see the rough one?

yes! found 'em! but they look a little pale for my taste... :( but the paraiba tourmalines look pale too and they are mostly deep turquoise so it could just be the photos...???

I don't think it's an exact science but they can get pretty close if you've got pictures of the color you're looking for. You could ask an see what they think!

I wouldn't think you would get a cutter to cut an amethyst of 5 mm for you. The stone would be under 1 ct. and amethyst that size should sell for about $20 per ct max. So you would be asking a cutter to spend 3 hours cutting a stone to then sell it for $10 to $15. Now figure he paid $3 for the rough, that $7 to $12 profit for 3 hours of work. Well below minimum wage.

Maybe you can find some calibrated amethysts at Rio Grande.

Try contacting Lisa Elser (http://www.lisaelser.com/index.html). I've talked to her about cutting smaller stones for me, and while she pretty much said the same thing as Gene, she did offer me another solution. She has contacts overseas that will cut to her specifications, or something similar to that.

Worth a shot anyway.

I'd also contact Dan Stair (customgemstones.com) and Michael E (gemshoppe.com). Both of them have cut pretty small stones before and may be able to help you. Out of curiosity, why are you specifically looking for a 5mm square amethyst? Are you replacing a lost stone?

i have found an awesome setting which can hold a 5mm princess stone, so that's why ;)
i'll e-mail some of those people. thanks again everybody!!! :D it's still so incredible to me that you can get these nice contacts with people on the other side of the world :twirl:

Would you be open to stones other than amethyst? You might have an easier time finding a smaller stone if it's more rare. Amethyst is all over the place, so it usually ends up large.

i may have to, yes. maybe something lavender, in between lilac and blue. so tanzanite maybe? or a raspberry pink stone, like a tourmaline?

Tanzanite is doable at that size, but some wouldn't put it in rings due to its fragility. I'd think about spinels too. I actually have a <5mm periwinkle-colored spinel from Dan Stair in a square radiant cut.

They do not have a 5-mm amethyst now. I believe their website is vance gems. At least that's how I googled them. They travel a lot and things on their website may be very good or not so good but at least they are always fair in describing what they sell and their prices are low. I believe TL has some experience working with them. I'd recommend e-mailing them and calling them - they are often on the road. I'd expect more luck working with them - they are nice people, the guy is a good cutter and their things are very inexpensive.

RockHugger was happy about her spinel, I bought Mahenge spinel of the same size (included) and a very nice color for $ 37.00. They are very precise in their descriptions: if they say "included", it will be included, if they say "included but very nice color", you will not see inclusions because of the color. They have good amethyst material, I believe.

Oh, I forgot to mention - prices there are about $ 5 - S 10.00 for a stone.
