Ruby is aluminum oxide that gets its color from a touch of chromium; spinel is magnesium aluminum oxide also with a bit of chromium. The really cool thing though is that whereas ruby is usually heated to improve its color and clarity, spinel is never heated. Also whereas the sky's the limit for a 3 carat ruby, nice spinel runs more or less in the same range as nice sapphire.Date: 5/8/2006 7:34:49 AM

beautiful stone, it looks like it could be a ruby. What's a spinel and where do they come from?
Well, they're not rubyDate: 5/11/2006 10:00:13 AM

Spinels do not look like rubies ...
What a silly statement by the jeweler. I believe that the diamond prices were higher back in the 80''s than they are now anyways. I''m going to email you a Word document about diamonds... their "rarity" and why they are priced as they are.Date: 5/11/2006 11:50:45 AM

Adam,
Yes, that would definitely work, but I''m stubborn as the day is long and I really think that I would look at it everyday and think it''s beautiful, but it would have been nicer with a pear... I''d rather wait another 6 months and find what I absolutely love than to just settle.
My boyfriend is the same way, we went to a place 2 days ago to a guy who is supposed to be a ''gemstone fanatic'' and he was trying to talk us out of it!!!!!! and buy a diamond. He said ''I, myself wouldn''t even consider in spending that much money on a sapphire, diamonds will always go up in value, and are more valuable.'' (I was thinking, okay let''s go, he doesn''t have anything and wants to sell us something he has....)
And my boyfriend said that he could care less if tomorrow it was worth $200 when he paid $4k!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he knows that he did the right thing in getting exactly what I wanted and that means more to him than anything. So, then the guy just completely shut up and started calling around to find it. lol
I was like wooooooooah, well said!
I know you are only suggesting, but we are two perfectionist here! I get crazy when there is a couple of leaves on the lawn, so an engagement ring, jeez!
Seriously I think he''s getting to the point of not caring if he goes over budget. He wants that sapphire, damnit. It''s sooo funny too because the guy brought out the GIA color chart and we both at the same time, pointed to the color........ that one!!! fingers crisscrossing and we started to laugh. It''s a B 66 GIA. I''m so glad that alteast we are on the same wave length!!! He knows what I like, and he likes it too.
Clearly, anywhere above 3.5 Ct you can''t buy a very fine ruby if you are not very rich, or willing to put a serious part of your money in it.Date: 5/12/2006 10:06:56 AM

Spinels do not look like rubies .... What else is red and even better untreated? Spinel, garnets, tourmaline, and sunstone come to mind. If I''m not going to spend upwards of $100k for a five carat ruby (still making compromises at that price, right?), I choose nice spinel, but other folks may make a different choice.
