Online I don''t know where else to look. I''ve been on NSC and nothing. Anyone I e-mailed said it would take awhile. If any one knows where I can find a Unheated 9x7mm Royal Blue pear shaped sapphire please let me know.

How about a nice unheated 9x7 pearshape red spinel at Multicolour instead?

Pretty reasonable for what it is.

beautiful stone, it looks like it could be a ruby. What''s a spinel and where do they come from?

Ruby is aluminum oxide that gets its color from a touch of chromium; spinel is magnesium aluminum oxide also with a bit of chromium. The really cool thing though is that whereas ruby is usually heated to improve its color and clarity, spinel is never heated. Also whereas the sky's the limit for a 3 carat ruby, nice spinel runs more or less in the same range as nice sapphire.

I think this one may be from Africa (look at the link), although spinel comes from all over. Like with ruby, Burma is where I think of first for top red-red spinel.

Didn't mean to sidetrack you, I was talking about spinel on a different thread, saw your post here, and remembered this pear. With nice colored gems, it's often tough to just order one up in the shape color and size that you want like you do a diamond; you often have to have some flexibility or jump on an opportunity when you see it.

Lovely color. Does Multicolor have a good rep though?
Are you set on a pear shape?

If this is the setting I choose than I kinda have no choice in shape but the pear or round and round I don''t like because it looks like it''s trying to replace a diamond.

I found someone near by that works out of their house for the past 25 years and they contacted someone that owns their own mine, so I''m waiting to hear from them in a couple of days. They also said they could try and get the Simon G. setting even cheaper!! So maybe we''ll have a little bit extra to put towards the stone.

here''s a pic of the setting, I didn''t even really like it at first, my boyfriend picked it out
It''s definitely unique and has really grown on me! My idea was the pear center, so we both have our 2c incorporated in it

Spinels do not look like rubies and never look as good in real as in photo (if photo is taken in a light box like I assume it is) : you get something like that only when light comes from everywhere at the same time which never appears in real.
The only exception is finest pink Namya spinel that are very slightly milky and strongly fluorenscent, they look even much better than the finest pink sapphires in natural light imo.

That''s why this spinel is sold for 1% of what a "similar" ruby would sell for.

Mustang - I don''t see why you couldn''t put an oval in that setting?

Adam,

Yes, that would definitely work, but I''m stubborn as the day is long and I really think that I would look at it everyday and think it''s beautiful, but it would have been nicer with a pear... I''d rather wait another 6 months and find what I absolutely love than to just settle.

My boyfriend is the same way, we went to a place 2 days ago to a guy who is supposed to be a "gemstone fanatic" and he was trying to talk us out of it!!!!!! and buy a diamond. He said "I, myself wouldn''t even consider in spending that much money on a sapphire, diamonds will always go up in value, and are more valuable." (I was thinking, okay let''s go, he doesn''t have anything and wants to sell us something he has....)

And my boyfriend said that he could care less if tomorrow it was worth $200 when he paid $4k!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he knows that he did the right thing in getting exactly what I wanted and that means more to him than anything. So, then the guy just completely shut up and started calling around to find it. lol
I was like wooooooooah, well said!

I know you are only suggesting, but we are two perfectionist here! I get crazy when there is a couple of leaves on the lawn, so an engagement ring, jeez!

Seriously I think he''s getting to the point of not caring if he goes over budget. He wants that sapphire, damnit. It''s sooo funny too because the guy brought out the GIA color chart and we both at the same time, pointed to the color........ that one!!! fingers crisscrossing and we started to laugh. It''s a B 66 GIA. I''m so glad that alteast we are on the same wave length!!! He knows what I like, and he likes it too.

Well, they're not ruby

. What else is red and even better untreated? Spinel, garnets, tourmaline, and sunstone come to mind. If I'm not going to spend upwards of $100k for a five carat ruby (still making compromises at that price, right?), I choose nice spinel, but other folks may make a different choice.

What a silly statement by the jeweler. I believe that the diamond prices were higher back in the 80''s than they are now anyways. I''m going to email you a Word document about diamonds... their "rarity" and why they are priced as they are.
Stick with your search for your sapphire. Think about it, you could walk into any mall jewelry store and find a diamond, so what is more rare?

This one is heated:

But a nice pear.

WOW! as my parrot says..................

Too bad it''s heated; the color, shape, size is perfect from the picture!!!!!!!!

Clearly, anywhere above 3.5 Ct you can''t buy a very fine ruby if you are not very rich, or willing to put a serious part of your money in it.

Spinels are second to rubies but to no other natural gemstone. You may even find some relatively inexpensive compared to quality (typicaly, I have a top top vivid and deep orangy pink spinel from Namya, very fluorescent, it''s better than a $50 000 sapphire of similar color and worth a fraction of it).

Found it, B953 on Arnstein''s NSC site, 2.81ct. Assuming it comes back from the lab unheated, I don''t know that better can be reasonably found
