Cat Problem

I swear, kids and pets seem like they just WAIT until the damn weekend to have their possibly urgent health problems!

Anyway, yesterday I noticed my cat kept biting at one of her dew-claws but cats do strange things, so okay. Now that front paw is swollen to at least twice the size of the other one, very noticeably. She seems like she's putting weight on it just fine when she walks but she keeps licking and biting it.

We clipped her claws before we left (we're out of the country now) but come to think of it, that was in late December. I don't recall having this problem with a cat before. Of course I was hoping it would just resolve itself but I guess we should take her in? We found a vet that's open today. Anyone with greater cat knowledge care to weigh in? Also, no vets near here appear to be open tomorrow, so if we don't take her in today, we have to wait until Monday. Thanks!

I never wait to take my cats to vet because I learned long ago that the longer one waits, the worse it can get and more money it will cost.

Did you check to see if there's an infection or evidence of a bite or perhaps an ingrown dew claw? I guess it doesn't matter because the swelling is a sign that something needs fixing. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Yeah, I kinda figured we should probably just take her to the vet. We can't see any problems with the paw so I have no idea. Husband is trying to get an appointment now. Thanks for weighing in.

Oh no, I agree with Matata, Take her in to the vet as soon as possible. Best case scenario she will heal on her own,.,worst case you don't want to find out. Not worth waiting. I am sorry @seaurchin it really is always something and usually multiple somethings. Good luck

If the vet won't take emergencies do you have an animal hospital? That's where we end up usually. They know what they are doing

You're already going to the vet, but while you wait to go in - have you been able to examine the paw and see if there are noticeable signs of trauma, wound or something else, aside from the swelling?

The swelling suggests there's inflammation. The fact she was paying excessive attention to her dew claw the day before suggests that there was something bothering her, whether and itch or a painful sensation, which is further proof towards the assumption of inflammation. You just have to figure out what the cause of the inflammation is and treat that. Fingers crossed all this gets fixed quickly and easily.

We were able to get a quick appointment, so that was lucky. The vet felt the paw and leg all the way up and doesn't think it was an injury, so she thinks it's from a bug bite. The only bugs we've seen in this place look like little ants but vet said they can bite. She gave kitty a shot and two types of pills for later, an anti-inflammatory and something to do with allergic reactions. Hopefully, that will resolve it. Thanks, everyone. Much appreciated.

ETA: Also, all that plus clipping all of her claws (and a complimentary little pack of kitty treats) was only $30 USD, for an emergency Saturday appointment.

Wait what!? $30 for an emergency Saturday appointment? What corner of the twilight zone do you live in?

HI:

Great price and service! Hope it helps and your kitty is a dolly.

cheers--Sharon

Aww. After the swollen paw, being stuffed into a crate for an Uber ride, dogs in the vet waiting room, getting a shot and etc., we finally made it home. Then I tried to give kitty her medicine, which she hated. She got away after a half dose and then strange awful white foam kept coming from kitty's mouth. Now she's between the mattress and the bedspread, a miserable hidden lump in the bed. She'll let me pet her through the bedspread while apologizing profusely, but she won't come out. :cry2:

Phooey. Stress and fear. Like humans who curl up in a fetal position. We all relate.
Healing vibes across the miles.

If they were fire ants, they bite and it hurts -- intense burning and then itching that can last a long time. I got bit in Texas and so did my dog and it was extremely unpleasant.

Was your kitty covered by pet insurance as that was way lower than I had expected?!

My vet charged me over 30 GBP just to have mine's claws clipped, as I forgot to ask for them to be clipped by the vet when I took her in for her annual boosters, so they charged me for 15min's appointment!

BTW, good to hear your kitty is recovering well.

Aww @seaurchin cats can be so challenging. I know ours act very similarly when we have to give them meds. Gracie is almost impossible to catch and hold. Your sweet baby will get over it. And treating her is more important so try not to worry. Sending you big hugs and your sweet kitty bucketloads of healing vibes. So glad you were able to get an appointment and wow that cost is incredible. We have to move. We cannot get out of the veterinarian's office for less than 200$ and that is for a routine visit. LOL. Mexico is looking very attractive not me right now hahaha. HUGS to you both!!!

Thank you, DK. We're in Mexico right now and that's just all they charged us, no insurance.

HI:

She any better today? Come out of hiding and eating?
