Anyone familiar with - CertifiedPlusDiamonds.com / Droste''s Jewelers? I note they list on their website, that OVALS with a depth of 66% to 68% will produce the smallest bowtie and that tables should be in the 50%-62% range, while depths should stay in the 62%-68% range. These numbers vary substantially from the Gem Appraisers guidelines of 59-63% depth and 57-60% table as being the best ranges. Any opinions on who has it right?

You can minimize or increase certain effects by changing the relative proportions in stones. That is true for all shapes.

The sellers of diamonds tend to promote the idea of buying deeper diamonds, not because they are truly "better" but because they sell for a bit less per carat. This happens because there is more weight retained from the rough diamond if a lumpier stone is cut from it. You are paying for the added weight, but the diameter of the stone is not really the best it could be and it will therefore look a little smaller.

"Better" or "Best", in my book, comes from a reasonable approach that moderation of all the important parameters leads one to the "ideal" configuration for each diamond. Not too deep or too shallow....Not too long or too short. I imagine you get my drift.

Appraising and grading diamonds is a lot different than selling them. I look at quality in the abstract rather than attaching it to commercial goals and price points. Diamond sellers will tell you lots that is very useful, but unbiased opinions also must play an important part in getting a great stone for your hard earned money.

I would go with Oldminer's advice simply because he is an independent appraiser and the other people are a commercial company trying to make a profit.

Look to see who has something to gain.
