I made the mistake of choosing a vintage pink champagne (Krug) thinking I was ordering sparkling pink rosé wine (twice) at a 3-star restaurant in a 5-star hotel in London recently, and only noticed my mistake when I discovered these 2 glasses cost more than the 7-course tasting menu when I received my bill. :roll2:
Should have paid more attention to the wine list, DOH! :roll2::lol-2:
Would not have minded had I thought it was great, and I did not think it was anything special, just pink fizzy wine! :lol-2:
I reminded myself of my dad's wise words - if I need to ask for the price first then it is too expensive for me! :lol-2:
The truly memorable meal for more ways than one was for my significant birthday and I am worth it!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DK!!!!!!

This reminds me of a funny experience back when Greg and I were dating in the 90s. We met his good friend at Chanterelle. My first meeting with Jeff.

We did the tasting menu and Greg said to Jeff why don't you choose the wine. At the end of the dinner Greg took the bill to pay and looked at Jeff and asked how did you choose the wine? Jeff said he chose the one that was in the middle for cost (260$ IIRC in the 1990s so not cheap lol)...no wine expertise at all but to pick the one in the middle  Greg never made that mistake again

Jeff was quite the character and my favorite person of all of Greg's friends once I got to know him.
May he RIP-gone too soon :(

@missy your post brought back a lovely memory of my own wedding meal back in the mid 90s.

It was at a 3-star restaurant (long gone) for just the two of us.

My then hubby was tasked to order the wine. Took one look at the wine menu and a deep breath later, he ordered the second cheapest - one above the house wine, and it was 50% more than the tasting menu per person at the time!

Again, I did not think it was anything special! :lol-2:

It was a lovely meal though - it was my first experience of fine dining.

Hope you’ve had a great birthday @dk168

@dk168 , there is no more appropriate time to waste a little money on middling fizzy pink wine.

Happy Birthday!

HI:

LOL Champagne and mistake never belong in the same sentence!

BTW we did the same thing at Mr. Chow's in Beverly Hills. Sticker shock over the glasses of Champagne! Should have inquired but didn't. LOL

cheers--Sharon

I’m no wine connoisseur but I do remember an unfortunate and sort of funny accident/ incident at a fancy restaurant. Someone had bought a very expensive bottle of vintage wine and as the waiter was carrying it to their table he tripped over a ladies handbag strap that was on the floor and it went flying to smash all over the floor. As the floor was being mopped up by napkins my friend mused if it was worth giving those napkins a squeeze over a glass so it wasn’t totally wasted!

Happy Birthday! I don't post as much as I should, but I always admire your aesthetic and the way you treat yourself to fine things. Adore your new coin!

When my husband and I first met (1983), we were truly broke. But he saved for a dinner in New York City and ordered a bottle of Chateuneuf-du-Pape, I believe from Domaine de Mont Redon (?). It was hard to find back then, and pricey for us, but we hunted it down for every celebration!

It's easy to find now, now that we're no longer connoisseurs!

Enjoy your celebrations!
