So I have changed my name on *most* things. The important things anyways. Today I was booking a flight with US Airways and realized I have to change my name on my frequent miles card in order to get credit and use my points (I finally have enough for a free ticket!!!) I called to ask about this she said I had to do this in writing by sending them a letter, a photocopy of my drivers license, AND a photocopy of my marriage lincense. What?!? It was easier to change my SS card! How annoying!

Anyone else run into problems changing your name?

Tacori, my FF program told me just to fax over that information aka copies of it and they''d take care of it. I did it with one but not another since I got lazy, and I have not had an issue..I''ve redeemed miles online etc with no issues without changing my name.

Some of my stuff has never been switched over...aka some of the household bills I just never got around to faxing the information to them. It hasn''t presented a problem and it''s been 3 years. hee. I guess they figure as long as the bill is paid they don''t care from who! hehe.

Faxing would be easier. I just thought it was so silly since it isn''t a cc or really anything important. Actually even my cc didn''t require anything in written or "proof" that I really got married. They did ask security questions though so maybe that is enough to make sure I am who I say I am.

I''ve heard this is a pain in the butt...I am not looking forward to it. Someone even told me to keep my name, it wasn''t worth the hassle...but that''s not true, of course. :)

I was amazed how easy it was to change my name on most credit cards! Only one cc company required me to fill out a form and mail a copy of my marriage certificate. I basically was able to change all the major things in about a half day, taking trips to the SS office, DMV, and both my banks.

Overall, it wasn''t too bad changing my name!

One of my friends told me she had so much trouble that I shouldn''t bother. She was moving from one state to another at the time though, so not only did she have to change her name, she had to establish residency, and all the utilities were set up in her new husband''s name! Talk about a headache! What disturbs me is I''ve seen so many different resources on how to change your name, and they all say something different. I''m not looking forward to the process, but I do think it''s worth it.

OMG! I''ve been married almost 6 months and I''m still finding things I need to change my name on. And I have to pay $30 to change my name on the title of my car.

The SS office didn''t even ID me

It was almost too easy to change (minus waiting in a very, very long line). My CC cards were changed over the phone as well as my health insurance. Cable has to be written too which I think is funny. good thing they don''t want my wedding pics since I STILL don''t have them

Don''t worry I am NOT holding out on you guys.

Appletini, I don''t think I am even going to bother changing my car title. I kept my maiden name as my middle name so at least it is still on my ID.

My state doesn''t require you change your name on the title of your car, don''t ask me why. I just had to change my name on my vehicle registration and driver''s license. Let''s hope there aren''t any problems if I ever need to sell my car!

I tried to go to DMV to change the name on my title and they told me to save the money... the guy said no one would really care if it was my maiden name vs my married name when I went to sell it. Since its paid for, I didnt bother.

I got the biggest run around from my work about changing my name! It would have been easier to find a new job.

It took like 6 weeks! You would have thought I was the first woman EVER in this HUGE company to change her name...

Oh, and 15 mos later, I still have plenty of things in my maiden name. Oh well!

Yeah I have to go through this frequent flyer card crap too... such a PITA. Plus I need to change my name on my passport before Christmas, and I''ve procrastinated for so long that I''m going to have to pay the extra money to expedite it. Ugh!

I had to change my name on my passport too. But since it was less than a year old, thankfully I did not need to pay anything! Plus, even though it said it would take a couple months to complete, I received my new passport in just a couple weeks.

Oh my passport! Well I figured I could make all my international flights in my maiden name until it expires. Is that a terrible idea? When we went on our honeymoon I didn''t pull my DL out once so I figured it wouldn''t matter.

To complicate things further, I just looked up name change on a passport and the only instructions I could find was for the specific situation of changing your name within 1 year of issue of your passport. There was nothing for people that have had theirs longer than a year. My last passport was issued in 1999, expiring in 2009. My weding is in 2007. I guess I can go ahead and get a new passport but it seems silly that they can''t just add a page to it. Or can they and they don''t tell us on their web page?

I actually told M that I hoped we were married before my passport expired because I didn''t want to have to apply for a new one with my maiden name. This was about 6 months before he proposed. He assured me that it wouldn''t be a problem. Of course, with a 2009 expiry date, it better not have been!

Yes, that REALLY irritated me. SO MUCH. I was even just hyphenating...it''s not like I was losing my last name altogether. But I still had to fax them a letter, the DL, and the marriage license. Irritating.

Can''t possibly be accomodating when it comes to frequent flier miles.

I was just surprised about the security messures (I am assuming that is why you have to have it in writing). I mean they are just miles. I would think with my CCs it would be more important to be careful (need proof). So strange!

thats funny tacori b/c i remember having the same problem with my ff program though delta. I think I finally got around to it but it was a pain. Most places were pretty easy and I have one CC i never changed. They need a copy of something and I just always forget. I don''t use the card often and don''t think about it until I pulling it out for some reason. The funny thing is the sales people usually ask for ID and my Driver''s licence name doesn''t match. I just hand it and smile and they have never once asked me about the name difference. So much for security when someones using a stolen credit card huh?

That is scary MrsS! Luckily my maiden name is now my middle name and it is on my DL so I can always explain I "just got married" even if it is 5 years from now.

Hey I look 16 anyways! I have two other airline FF cards (airtran and delta) but there are hardly any miles on them. Guess I should change them all at once.

small thread-jack

I once had my wallet stolen and the dude who took it tried to use my check card WITH my driver''s license telling the clerk - this is my GF''s and she wanted me to use her card to pay for this.

and the clerk LET HIM

luckily he was caught trying that again @ a gas station a couple of days later and I got all of my stuff back (thank goodness! no trip to the DMV for that one)

They''re probably not even looking at the name on your card. I worked at kmart when I was 16 and Boston Market after that and I NEVER looked at the name on the card. We were never told to do it! And when you''ve got a long line of customers who are complaining about how long it''s taking, you don''t even think about it.

A friend of mine once started signing random things on receipts to see if people were checking his signature. They weren''t. He signed things like Superman and such an no one ever even noticed.

If you move, please fill out a separate change of address for each last name you use. The computers won''t understand that Mia Farrow and Mia Allen and Mia Farrow-Allen are the same person.

Thanks reader. We aren''t planning on moving for awhile but I know many BIW will so that is good advice.

How timely! I just began the name change process today. Went to the SS office, and was in/out in 10 minutes. I have an appt with the DMV on Thursday, and that will take care of the basics.

I am so not looking forward to the rest. I travel for biz extensively, and am a member of numerous airline/car/hotel progams. I have a ton of miles/points in United and Starwood, and want to make sure I get credit for new travel. Good thing I don''t hit the road again until the first week of December!

Tacori- I too am taking my maiden name as my middle (i wasn''t given a middle name at birth).

Charger- I dropped my middle name. There was nothing wrong with it. It is a lovely name but it means NOTHING to me compared to his last name, my maiden, and of course my first. I haven''t tackled the FF miles yet. I have to get our MC out of our safe deposit box and have been putting off a trip to the bank. My CCs were easy, almost TOO easy. I didn''t bother to change all my bills. As long as I pay them on time I doubt it matters. My bank was fairly easy but I still have to do my business accounts. Just tackle it a bit at a time

ROFL.. I''m still going through all of that too.. I tried to change my name with the company I bought my car through and they are being quite difficult and want a copy of oh, everything.. Due to the nature of what Steve does.. our license is confidential.. what part of confidential is misunderstood? lol My name still isn''t changed over on my travel info either.. they wont do it without the ''proper documentation''... sigh.

I agree with you, it was easier to change my SSN and my DL..
20.gif
We''re not talking national security here, we''re just talking I got married. MY CHECK is good enough for them to cash in my new married name, but they won''t change over my name? Please. Idiots... I swear.

I would just leave it in your maiden name. I am not bothering changing my car title and stuff. I don''t see the point.

So I went to the DMV today, and was in/out in 5 minutes flat! It would''ve been 3 minutes if I hadn''t had to run into the bathroom to check myself out in the mirror. I had no clue that I was getting a pic taken. It certainly helped that I had an appointment.

I just hope my good luck continues throughout the rest of the name-changing process!
