A recent mag. article said that the peak hours of internet sales are during the afternoons while everyone is working. . .

Many of you seem to be posting while working. . .out of curiosity, how many hours a day do you think you spend online rather than working?

at the moment... since serving my notice... most of the day is spent on here...

before i handed in my notice...

i spent the same amount of time, but was a little more covert about it

I was wondering the same thing yesterday! Everyone seems to be online at work.. What kind of jobs do you all have that you get so much internet time?

I''ve bought things on the internet while at work. My job involves either serving the customer who is there or waiting for people who are late (or no showing for their appointment). There isn''t a lot of downtime but sometimes there is.

So there isn''t a whole lot that I can do other than casually surf the web in downtime when the customer might walk in late for their appointment at any second.
If I were to really get started doing something cognitive it would be frustrating to just have to drop it. Before the internet I used to read a magazine.

I used to be in marketing, specifically internet/online marketing which involved being online and at my computer for 9/10ths of the day. I always ran PS in the background and checked in between presentations etc.

Now I'm in sales so I am out and about more but I still spend a fair amount of my day on the computer doing quotes and research etc...so depending on how busy I am, I check into PS less than my old job, which is kind of funny since my old job was salary and my newer job (~1 yr) is commission! Guess now I *have* to work!

I think alot of people who work in corporate are at their desks most of the time multi-tasking, and it seems like alot of companies don't necessarily monitor work surfing as long as it's not ****, hehe.

I''m on the internet about 6 hours out of my work day, the other 2 hours is lunch!

I don''t quite make 6 figures, but my company pays me a nice salary for the amount of "real" work I do.

I''m a Tech Info Scientist at a Beverage Company.

Yep, I can be on a conference call, Instant Message a co-worker about what was just said on that call, surf Pricescope, and then put that call on hold to answer another call, all at the same time

Oh, forgot to add: and eat my oatmeal for breakfast and drink coffee too.

I''d say most of my job is spent in front of or near a computer...so I always have websites on and check them when I have nothing to do. I''ve definitely shopped online, check my private email accts, spend time on AIM, pricescope, play games...they really don''t check our computers. The only time they put out a memo about appropriate computer use was when they discovered **** downloaded on a few computers (we have some communal ones in the lounges). Now we just can''t download but there aren''t any other restrictions...as long as we''re getting our work done they don''t mind what we do.

lol!

I've realized that working at home and for myself is a really really bad idea. In fact, it's a bad idea for my husband too. I'll walk into our office and find him playing a video game instead of being productive. . .lol

BUT, at least I can write off about 1/2 of the items I order online so this habit isn't necessarily a non-business way to spend my day

At my current job, I can''t get on the internet at all unless it is work related. Every week, my boss gets an email that tells him what web sites I have visted and how long I was on that site.

At my first real job right out of college, I got in the habit of surfing the web for probably six hours out of my eight hour a day work week. It only took me a day to do all of my quarterly goals, and the job was so boring!!

I have no internet access at work so if I''m on during the day it''s because I''m not working. I work 3 days a week. I was on a lot last week as my office was closed. Otherwise I do my posting and reading after work or on weekends.

I have no internet access at work since I work in a gov''t facility that has an internal intranet and I have no need for a regular internet account there. Even if I had access I wouldn''t use it at work. We consent to monitoring by using the systems we have and there are some internet accounts, but those are for official use only. I work 32 hours/week and my day off is Friday, so unless I''m on leave or it''s Friday, you wont see me on duirng the work day. I do see a lot of people on during the day. I know a few are stay at home moms and some work from home, but others talk about jobs so obviously some are logging on at work. I use my work computer for almost all of my job and dont'' really have the time to be logging on elsewhere.

When I used to do psychotherapy for money I couldn''t read Pricescope at the same time. Oh! And the computer in my "office" (the family room which had all the toys since I was seeing children for the agency) had no ''net access, either. It just had children''s games on it :-). Therapy used to be a quiet affair...unless a client went ballistic and started to scream. Last year I had a client take a cell phone call during our session, however! What *will* they think of bringing into a session next? Have I digressed sufficiently?

Deb :-)

It was bad for me to be on the internet all the time. I am kind of glad that my current job doesn''t allow it. I am also in a cubicle now instead of being in my own office like I was before. Even if I did have free internet access, everyone walking by could see what I was doing, so I wouldn''t be able to anyway.

Oh, yea....I got laid off from my first job, so maybe my boss did know after all!! It was all good, though, because I had been job hunting for five months... I found a job the week after I got laid off, and my old job gave me a package - I got paid for five more months with full benefits. Plus, my new job paid me 30% more.

It is easy to become addicted to playing on the internet at work. It started with just a few minutes a day, and before I knew it, I was on there all day. My friend and I would email back and forth all day. We had actual conversations on email all day long.

I run a lot of programs that require intense work...then time to "build" which is just PC processing time. I don''t have enough power on my PC to work on the next project while one is building which leaves me with internet search time. For awhile I actually had 2 computers so I could work on one while the other "processed" but that got removed a year or so ago. So, now I have time to kill and I can only file or clean my office so often....

I work in politics but the bulk of my job is doing research, so I''m on the computer all day long anyway. I usually have five or six web pages open so it''s easy to be on here and shop and do all the fun stuff that I''m not supposed to be doing.

Can I just tell you how often I find the paralegal (male) looking at ****. Seriously, I think he has issues LOL.... I don't care b/c he's totally cool, but it's so odd. And it's mostly Japanese anime/cartoons. I feel sorry for his girlfriend. He's totally repressed. He triesto click off as soon as he sees me but it's always too late. I pretend I don't see anything. You should SEE the stuff I get a glimpse of. We're talking close up, woman parts Hustler ****. He's been here for so many years and is a good guy so I ignore it. I'm the only woman in this office but it's no big deal. He's very polite and a total gentleman to everyone. Very odd indeed!

As for the internet, I call it THE DEVIL NET. I'm ADDICTED!

I had to laugh at this one! I'm on computers all the time - I keep the servers at work running.... We all have multiple computers on our desks (three on mine), we multi-task all the time, when servers have problems we use the web for research, sometimes for hours.......

The little incidental personal web surfing we all do is nothing compared to our work time.

We have a lot of time flexibility, but this cuts both ways. Basically our bosses just expect us to get the job done, whether that takes an hour or 16 hours...we work untill the servers are operating again....Lunch and dinners are considered expendable....

I do try to reserve my Pricescope time for home though because it is so addictive that once I get on, I may stay reading posts for hours!
