If a stone is listed with "small chip in cutlet" is that a really bad thing? I figure it would be easy to hide but would the stone be fragile. The gem is a 9 on Mohs

It depends; do you have a picture of it? Sometimes, a small chip which removes the pointed end can end up looking like an additional facet, making it look like a large culet akin to the older cut stones (OMC and OEC). As for its durability, unless it has inclusions near it, it should be fine (and assuming the chip is really small).

Oh, it’s one of Bob’s stones. In this case, the size of the chip will be quite small to the naked eye, especially at arm’s length but it is up to you whether you find it acceptable or not. Bob did not use much lighting in his pictures which might account for the sapphire looking quite dark in a few of his pictures. As he has given a decent discount for the chip and if he is local to you, it may be worth the shipping fee if you really like the sapphire. What I question are the lines across the table of the stone. Is it unheated? Are those rutile? Are they noticeable IRL?

Thanks I emailed him some questions.

I went ahead and purchased it. The price was right. I love the color in some photos and in others it looks quite dark. We shall see IRL

Hi: Just checking in to see if you got your Sapphire!

;( No. I have emailed him twice and he said it's on it's way. I should have it by now if he sent it. I emailed him this morning asking him if I should be concerned it hasn't arrived. I hope it is not lost in the mail?

I just had a similar experience with Bob - got the message that my stone was mailed, waited several days, started to panic. I emailed him, and there had just been an oversight. He apologized and promised to mail it the same day, and I received it 2 days later. I hope yours arrives soon - it's no fun to be waiting by the mailbox every day, only to find junk mail!

Hi,

Just wanted to make a comment. This Bob Kast seems a bit difficult to work with. He doesn't seem to be all that responsible. I read this over and over. He doesn't even answer e-mails. What kind of businessman is this? Not for me.

He's been a bit slow with shipping but he has answered all emails timely.

This has been my experience as well, but compared to what other people charge for similar stones I'm willing to take a certain amount of risk and hassle. My priority is quality for cheap but others' might be fantastic service or getting exactly what they want which I wouldn't recommend him for.

Bob isn't as responsive as say Barry ... but he isn't a bad guy. His prices make up for the lower customer service levels. I wouldn't say his service is so poor that I wouldn't use him .. I actually like him. He will do what is right - send you a stone to look at, allow returns etc.

PS: Culet :)

Hi, I'm afraid I have to line up on the side of those who have had less than stellar experience with him.

At this point, it's almost funny.
after a couple unanswered emails, I just paypal'd for a stone I wanted and
emailed him I had done so.

That was Aug 11

On the 18th Aug I received an email that basically said, if I wanted the stone to
please Paypal the money.

I politely mentioned that I had already paid, and forwarded the Paypal invoice.
Then on the 20th Aug I got a message that he got the payment and would send it
that day.

Well, I guess the wind is not blowing very strongly from
CA to TX, because the stone hasn't made it here yet.
I have sent him a few emails since then but haven't heard from him.
I mean, if you just haven't got around to it, just let me know.
I am ok with that as long as you let me know something came up, or whatever.

I have been somewhat amused by the whole situation thus far (I am easily amused, too)
But today I feel crabby and passive aggressive.
That is why I asked if OP got her sapphire yet.
At least, I know not to take it personal.

Maybe I will have to tell him my name is CharmyPoo!

aaaah my bad

My experiences have been sorta backwards. I would ask him about a stone and then it will show up at my house. Then I email him ... hey I got the stone but I didn't pay .. shouldn't I pay you?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

He kinda gave me the impression the other 2 times that the stone had been sent priority mail. Today he told me to be patient the stone was sent yesterday. Well I wasn't trying to be impatient I was truly worried it was lost. I am in a good mood today and I found it amusing. I think he just does things on his own time. Not everyone is on ME time I guess :naughty: Again the price was really good. I am pretty uneducated about gems so when I get it I'll be posting pics so you all can advise me if it is a keeper.

I sent him a friendly email yesterday, too!
At least you heard back from him! 8-)
Will look forward to seeing your sapphire when you get it!

The experience of shopping/buying from Bob isn’t for everyone. While his customer service is lacking in some ways (slow response), he is an honest lapidary that allows returns with no questions asked/hassles. He also carries well saturated pink tourmalines at extremely competitive prices. Sometimes he emails right away and sometimes, he seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. He has also sent me stones out of the blue that I’ve inquired about without getting payment first, like Charmy!

Hey, ya know, I am likin' this particular stone.............

Maybe one of you guys.......... JK !!!!
