I noticed a chip in my platinum engagement ring this morning. The only thing I can think of is that this occurred when I dropped the ring accidentally onto my tiled bathroom floor last night. Oops. The chip is fairly substantial, and is much deeper than a scratch. Will this be a problem for the jeweler to buff out, and will the ring have to be equally buffed out all over since the chip is sort of deep?

buffing out a deep scratch on Plat. is awkward. If it is a chip it could be that a piece has come out. It happens occasionaly, sometimes when metal is cast (formed) a small pocket of air can occur, known as porosity. If this is the case the area can break out. Porosity occurs to some degree in all cast metals. If it's minor it's not a problem. Major is a big problem. Have it checked by a good gold/plat smith or a gemologist can usually tell. It is not something that can normally be determined at a retail store level

Adamas, thanks for your response. If the chip leans towards being more substantial, then what is the recourse? It is a plain Tiffany-style solitaire- would it be best to just get a new one?

it's more the question of if it's porosity how prevelant is it. Assuming it is an isolated area and not in a structuraly signifigant area, filling/repair will be fine.
