Woman stabbed after saying no to proposal
Victim played dead as attacker stabbed her multiple times
By Simon Read - STAFF WRITER
A Concord woman is in stable condition after a man stabbed her multiple times after she turned down his marriage proposal.
The attack occurred early Sunday morning after the two attended a party Saturday night in Walnut Creek, officials said.
``We''re investigating this as an attempted murder,'''' said Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff''s Department. After the party, the 21-year-old victim and the unnamed suspect drove to the 4200 block of Camino Diablo Road in Byron, Lee said.
``It''s an isolated area,'''' he said. ``It''s surrounded by a dirt road and there''s a sewage plant. Both the victim and suspect got out of the car. He proposed, and she said no.''''
Angered by the rejection, the man slashed the woman''s throat, Lee said. The woman fell to the ground and played dead as her attacker stabbed her numerous times.
``He pushed her into some sort of canal or drainage ditch,'''' Lee said. ``He fled the scene, and she was able to crawl out and walk to a nearby house.'''' The home''s occupants notified authorities, Lee said, prompting the arrival of sheriff''s investigators, paramedics and a medical helicopter. The woman was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she is listed in stable condition, officials said.
``She is expected to survive,'''' Lee said. ``Obviously, we are talking to her and trying to develop suspect information.''''
Lee said the victim and her attacker were neighbors, though neither one knew each other that well. It''s unclear why the two drove to Byron following the party.
