Hello lovely people. I would be super grateful for your help, please.
So, I recently became the proud owner of a pair of ACA diamond earrings. I went through things in more detail in this thread.
The earrings were:
0.602 ct G VS1 5.41 x 5.44 x 3.32, Table 57.5, Crown angle 34.6, Pavillion angle 40.7, lower girdle % 76
0.602 ct G VS1 5.39 x 5.41 x 3.34, Table 57.3, Crown angle 34.9, Pavillion angle 40.8, lower girdle % 76
However, there was an issue with one of the diamonds, which I could see under LED spotlighting (and I have lots of LED spotlighting in my house). Despite the purchase of ammonia, lots of cleaning in the ultrasonic, etc., I could still see a difference between the two diamonds. After liaising with Whiteflash, who have been AMAZING, I had to send the pair back. They reviewed them and agreed one of the diamonds definitely looked different under LED lighting compared to the other. We have no idea why, and this is definitely not something I have ever encountered in my many many hours reading on Pricescope. Individually the diamonds look lovely, but as a pair they really didn't match under that specific lighting condition and I couldn't cope with it.
Basically, I need to choose a new pair of diamond earrings and I'm trying to choose a matching pair. This is stressing me out because I don't know whether to balance a purer match against a slightly bigger pair. Please help.
With my previous earrings, which I only had briefly, I could very easily see a size AND shape difference between the two earrings, so I KNOW I have very sensitive eyes. They had different sparkle patterns to me, too (although this may have been whatever was going on that affected the one in LED light, I don't know). Once they were in my ears, the size difference/shape difference wasn't so much of an issue, but I would be extremely keen to avoid this in the new pair regardless. The sparkle difference WAS an issue, hence my return of them.
I am currently looking at two pairs:
The first pair:
0.62 ct F VS1 5.47 x 5.46 x 3.37, Table 57.0, Crown angle 35.0, Pavillion angle 40.8, low girdle % 75
0.62 ct F VVS2 5.48 x 5.46 x 3.37, Table 57.0, Crown angle 35.0, Pavillion angle 40.8, lower girdle % 75
The second pair:
0.70 ct G VS1 5.74 x 5.72 x 3.54, Table 56.0, Crown angle 35.0, Pavillion angle 40.8, lower girdle % 75
0.71 ct G VS1 5.73 x 5.71 x 3.53, Table 57.0, Crown angle 34.5, Pavillion angle 40.8, lower girdle % 75
I'm struggling guys. I've been quite shaken by my experience with the original pair.
I really love that the first pair matches in all the 'numbers'. There is a slight 'shape' difference between the two but I'm pretty sure even my eyes can't see the difference of 0.01mm in one direction.... I mean come on. I tend to personally find VVS2 a bit too 'much' (I don't feel the need to pay the extra for it) but it's fine for a really well-matched pair. I think the first pair are REALLY REALLY well matched - probably about as good as one would ever get.
However, once I had the opportunity to look at other diamonds, I found myself looking at slightly bigger diamonds. I really enjoyed the size of the 0.602 carat Gs I had before; in person I felt they were pretty big. I did, however, also feel I wouldn't be mad at slightly bigger, and looking at photos I think I could get away with slightly bigger. I know that 6 mm earrings are too big, both with the way I feel they look on me and also socially, but 5.7 ish mm would be good. I want these to be my life-long earrings so I want to listen to that feeling of 'I could go bigger' and at least consider it. I also had a bit of a sentimental attachment to the fact they were Gs, as my partner's surname begins with G. These are a gift from him.
It's just, the Gs have a 1% difference in table percentage and a slightly different crown angle. I'm concerned I might be able to see that difference in person. Will I be able to see that difference in person? I have asked for pictures of both pairs but feel I need to work through these feelings before I get the pictures.
I think, typing this out, I'm going to end up going for the F pair just so I know when looking at them that there's no visual difference between the pairs and that anything I am seeing is 'in my head' as it were. But I would like to go for the size of the Gs. I have been liaising with Liza (who has been great). I've told her I'm leaning toward the Gs (for being bigger) and I am... but then I think I need to lean toward the Fs for the matching nature of them and to reduce my 'looking' for a lack of match. And then I worry I'll be sad I went a bit smaller and could have gone slightly bigger. Liza sent me a video - my eyes are drawn to the bigger pair, and then they're immediately drawn to trying to check if I can see the table size difference. Which perhaps tells me that I need to go for the F pair instead.
Here's the video:
I just need a bit of sense bashed into me. I did a lot of work with myself to 'get over' what I thought I could see with the original pair, and then felt very sad I couldn't get over it. I was worried it was just in my head, as it were. They were an extremely special gift from my partner and I had chosen them on his behalf - and somehow I still managed to get it wrong; I was really disappointed. Then it turned out the difference wasn't just in my head, but I still went through that process and I am frightened of having the same experience with a new pair. I can't get it wrong again. However, I'm equally worried I won't make the most of this opportunity given that I have to change pairs, and that I'll find myself wishing I went for the bigger pair.
Thanks so much to anyone who has any words of wisdom.
Please don't get me wrong, I understand I am crazy, and that these are tiny tiny stones with minuscule differences, and I know they'll be in different ears... I just need to discuss this with people who might get it.
