Chrono & others - will this window close at all?

So - what do you think - any chance this window will close at all? Or any chance the color will be distracting enough?

Not likely and definitely not completely. It looks about medium sized and whether the colour will be distracting enough depends on the tolerance of the wearer. Sometimes even with great colour, if the window is too obvious, it bothers me and I'm not even a stickler for precision cutting. No chance of a hand shot? You don't think you'll be bothered by the tip being quite a bit darker than the rounded part?

From the picture - no the color difference of the tip to the end doesn't bother me. But I haven't yet developed the translation part of my eye to imagine how it will look in my ring.....

the window is the least of the faults in that stone

I actually like the color...its interesting. The window..will never close IMO.

VL...can you expand on your thoughts about the particular stone? Aside from the cut--the color pops pretty nicely. I think most elongated pears gather color on the tip/ends, no?

What else are we missing?

VL made me check the vendor's listing to view the other pictures. Do ask the vendor how he thinks the stone will fare as a ring stone. The inclusions show up better in the other pictures and location and size would make me rethink this.

There are clarity issues. There is a cloudiness obscuring the view through the window. There is, in the surface highlighted crown facet at 9 o'clock some pitting like blemishes that suggest a sugary granularity rather than a single crystal structure to the stone. I imagine this affects polish all over. This is evident in the crystal waviness seen at 1 and 5 oclock where pavilion reflects but crystal distorts like heat waves rising in the desert. there is a blueish zone I think at 6 oclock being more strongly reflected at 12 oclock. The shallowness extends all the way to the tip, making it unlikely the stone is lively.

eta: Chrono are there other pics? I didn't see a link. I will go look at the vendor I think it is.

VL,
I think the "blue zoning" seen extending from 12 to 6 is the bow-tie lighting up, which is normal to sometimes show a slightly different hue. No links were shared but I think you know who the vendor is too.

Could be. Still I can imagine RW saying, "sugary crystal,... what crystal?"!!

I've just looked at all of the photos and in two of the others, the stone looks less cloudy BUT I agree that I think the clarity issues are against it and performance will be negatively impacted. For the price it's not too bad though and I like all the different colours you can see (especially evident in some of the other photos). It's a good colour for a tourmaline and there's nothing to suggest it will go brown in incandescent lighting.

I would ask these questions - he is SO honest and would rather have you fully understand what you're getting so that you're not surprised and send it back. That said, he has been nothing but 100% gracious when I have sent stones back, but still :))

He's already answered my email telling me based on my PS post he's sure the stone won't work for me. Thanks all.....

Can you please clarify? Is it the window? Or is it the clarity?

I'm sorry - I didn't mean to leave that important bit of info out.... just came back from the pediatrician so I'm a bit more distracted than my usual

He said "While the color is pretty, The window does detract and I don't believe it will close up when set. I won't recommend this stone to you as I don't think it will meet your expectations."

Thanks all!

Oh what a shame but what kudos to the vendor.

I'm sorry the search for the right pear continues but as usual, this particular vendor is honest and upfront about his stones when asked.

I completely agree, he has been great as have all of you, thank you!!

JBK: we'll find it, we really will! Remember a while ago when you decided to go with amethyst? Whatever happened with that? It seems like you're broadening it to any hard, bright stone?

Can you share who the vendor is? I'd love to see the other pictures to better understand the posts.

No problem, jbk. I realize you had to hide the name of the vendor at the beginning so the stone wouldn't get bought under you. Thanks for posting the vendor. It's good to know who the honest ones are.

Thanks for the encouragement Minou! :wavey: Jerry cut me a beautiful amethyst but it was not quite the right shape. Another cutter I had been speaking with never got back to me. So yes - I'm broadening to durable/bright mainly because the 11x7 is a really difficult size.

Pregcurious - I COMPLETELY agree! We do have access to some really great cutters and honest vendors. And I am always happy to support them and tell others too! :D

Goodness gracious, I just realized my mint garnet pear is 10.9 x 7.2 mm, a perfect fit for your setting. Perhaps you are willing to sell it to me.  But really, I feel your pain in trying to find a stone that looks nice, is not too expensive yet fits the setting. I don't think I've ever seen anyone struggle through this as much on PS. Perhaps it is due to the larger size and pear shape. If it were a round or a cushion, it would not have taken this long. An oval would have been found months ago.

Chrono - that would be PERFECT! I'm easily findable :D
Don't I know it! Its definitely the size/shape. Like you said - anything else - I would have been finished a LONG time ago ;(

You are kidding, right?

nope. This setting deserves to be worn and loved AND deserves a colored stone (sorry diamond lovers) :D

OH.....all right, I'll see if I can find you somehow. Are you absolutely sure? I'd feel bad if you regret parting with such a lovely setting.
