Hi, just I won this ring. Both the stone and ring are both suppose to be 1930 era. From a reputable seller. I haven't received them yet so I haven't gotten to take a pic or clean them up. These pic's are from the seller. Ok so what I'm wondering is this. The seller said this stone is Citrine. But I know the sellers don't always really know. And they don't all have gemstones tester to even guess with. And of course most of them don't run them to a gemologist. ;) I really would like you to throw out ideas and let me know what you think please. I have seen another stone that was "Citrine" like this but didn't have the tiny flashes (rainbows?) of color I see when I zoom in on this. Thanks! Do Citrines have silk or anything in them that would make rainbow like flashes?

I have never seen dispersion in Quartz/Citrine.

My hunch is that the stone is CZ. That being said, its very difficult to ID a stone from a picture.

Chris the good thing is, I can return this if I find anything wrong. So first I will test it with my gemstone tester. Then if I still feel I need to have it looked at, I will. I know a jeweler, that has a well equipped gemologist, that I have used and can trust. I was wondering if anyone would know of any other gemstones that would look like this, with the sections of clear and the yellow that have a small amount of dispersion. Like golden beryl or if this looks like citrine anyone has ever seen. I have lots of books on gemstones, that show stones with dispersion and are yellow but very soft.
This stone has no damage and no wear. So if this is really a older stone, its a harder stone. I was looking at the cut, to figure out when this stone would have been made . How many facets etc. Its not the typical vintage cut square stone that have the corners cut off or rounded off. Anyone know when this cut came out?
Here is another pic of the only "other citrine" that I could find that looks anything like this one. This one does have the corners rounded off. But has no life or dispersion. Thanks for your help and comments! I really wish others would also jump in and comment. :)

Whatever it is, based on the cut and condition, I'd say the stone is not the original stone. The design is very modern and extremely well cut. It also doesn't strike me as citrine; my guess is some sort of synthetic.

I agree with Chrono about the cut. The corners are very sharp, and over time would have most likely been chipped.

I will do my best to figure out what it could be and then when it gets here follow through with finding out what it is or at least do my best too. ;) I also was thinking it wasn't the original stone. From the cut. But would still like to know when did this cut first come out and would you call it a princess cut or something else? Anyone know that?

Thanks for your replies! :wavey:

It looks like a "calibre" cut band that someone bought off of ebay, then returned when they found out the stones were CZs. Sorry, I don't remember the thread.

Also, there are hundreds of cut designs. Calibre is the name given to a general square shaped stone.

FrekeChild Thanks for your input. I know bidding online is a gamble and in this case I really can't lose. So I will be happy as long as its pretty and a wearable gemstone. Of course if it's synthetic, it will go back. If its a Moissanite I would keep it. I find its a lot of fun doing searches for info. on what it could be. :loopy:
I know the ring looks filthy, but I'm sure clean up it will look %100 better! I had to ask the seller, if he could tell me anything about the rings history. (I always enjoy knowing, when vintage if possible.) This is what he said, and I know its the little old lady and the car she only drove on Sunday, to church and back story.
"hello-I bought this from the estate of a 90 year old women-she was an antique jewelry dealer who had a shop for most of her life -she was married to a doctor-she had the most incredible collection of jewelry I have ever seen! -thanks-best regards,"
And BTW I finely did find one style of cut that was just right, for this stone and I know its out there but the cut looks right. Modified Brilliant square cut.
Thank you again for commenting!

Based on the cut, colour and facet abrasion I'm afraid I agree with everybody else that this is unlikely to be Citrine and is a fairly modern stone put into a vintage setting. I sometimes buy rings for settings and then discard the central stone - did you buy it for the stone or setting?

I bought it for both, at a very lost cost and the option to return. Sadly I think by the time I would get it fixed it may run a bit more then just having the stone set. (if it was just for the stone I could have bought a good stone online from a gemstone stone site, much cheaper and just put the money in the stone) Bidding is a lot like a lotto you just never know what you may get and its so much fun! If you can return it if your not happy.

And since I can't afford a yellow diamond I really want something that will look like one. I do enjoy vintage jewelry. But I also figure a ring is ALL about the stone! Then the setting its in for me. I would rather have a stone and a setting to wear it in, then have a stone just sitting in a box and waiting for a setting.

I do already have a light orange-yellow Spessartite Garnet. And a who knows what in sterling...in the same color. But one can never have too many rings! And I just love checking things out like this ring and stone that's on its way! :naughty:

I also wondered if the stone had any wear or damage. So I asked before bidding, if it had any wear on the facets or flea bites. The seller said no. And that could also be a reason I would send it back. If I'm disappointed in anyway, it goes back. I'm looking for a good hard gemstone, that will make me feel I have the bit of yellow I want. I have a yellow CZ but it just doesn't do it for me really.
BTW this ring has not been clean in anyway, but I also love finding out what it will look like after a good cleaning!

One of my big questions is, has anyone ever seen a Citrine that looks like this or the another one posted below the one that is coming with the ring? Of course Citrine is a quartz and so I guess its possible. To have the inclusions in it like this. I will be happy with it, if it is Citrine and has some life to it. I will just have see what it looks like once clean. You know? :)

BTW I'm not thrilled with the poor setting for my Spessartite Garnet. I have would love to have it reset. And I wanted to say I love your avatar! What is it? A green garnet? ;)

That is most definitely NOT a citrine OR it is one but has been photoshopped and colour adjusted to hell and back. :(

Citrine is a quartz am I right? I know most the sellers doesn't know what they are selling . Could it be a quartz with a few chunks of colored inclusions?
And did you see the pic that is faded looking, below the first few that has a princess cut with the corners off? I saw that also listed as Citrine and that only after a all day search.
So from all I found I agree I don't think it is.

Citrine, Amethyst, Smokey Quartz, Rose Quartz are all variations of quartz and Ametrine is the combination of Citrine and Amethyst.

Citrine typically is either a pale yellow colour (like the one you've referred to as faded) or a yellow that typically takes on a yellow/brown appearance. What it is never is bright neon yellow. The colour in your last photo indicates a synthetic or a stone that has been treated in a number of different possible ways.

Unfortunately although quartz is a naturally occurring gemstone, it's also highly synthesized. For example, if you look at some of the Ametrines for sale on Ebay with a perfect delineation between the purple and yellow you would be wise to suspect it's not a gemstone dug up from the earth. For comparison, go to the suggested vendor list and have a look at the Citrines they have to sale. You may find some very pretty ones but not ones that absolutely scream neon yellow.

Believe it or not, there is synthetic citrine as well. I don't know why either since they are inexpensive to begin with but perhaps to get better looking stones. I've seen some orangish citrine as well, which can be quite beautiful. I'm guessing the photo with the round stone is either synthetic or an inaccurate representation of the citrine, which happens when the camera doesn't want to co-operate.

Chrono, maybe I should take down the pic of my yellow orange garnet, that is the one sitting on the flower. It has a veil going through it and its crazy hard to get a pic of. But pretty sure it is a garnet and real. My gemstone tester at least gives me a good guess at what it is as well as trying to judge what inclusions are in gemstones.
I did try, I think to tone down the contrast in that pic. It was taken in florescent lighting, in a hospital. (sister in-laws flowers) :D
