Classic and timeless or unique and “out there”?

I ask because often when I show my bff who loves classic pieces, a jewelry item I’m interested in… she’s like: wow that is a weird one!

And I think she’s right.

But do you know what? I love the “out there” pieces! Even though I think the timeless items would get more wear and have more longevity.

What about you? Which way do you lean?

I like all of it. I lean more classic because the design of most of the out there pieces I like are not practical for long term wear and I would only wear them for short amounts of time during activities that wouldn't cause damage. That applies to rings & bracelets. Earrings and necklaces are anything goes if I like it.

I like both. But I don’t think I’d ever be truly satisfied with super classic and simple - like a Tiffany’s solitaire with an MRB. It’s just not me.

But I also like practical, wearable pieces. So I need to temper my inner wild child

I like it all. Almost everything is a little weird and a little classic (just like humans).

The only thing I don't like is a new iteration of a classic style that is poorly or clumsily executed -- so it just looks like a bad photocopy.

I got classics. And then never wore ‘em. Let’s define “out there”…

I think I lean more “out there” than classic, but it depends on how you define “out there” I suppose!

I love designing my own pieces and doing something different with them. So while I love classic staple pieces and I have/wear them a bunch; I like to try and tweak something in the design - either do something creative with the basket, or the shape of the halo, or something.

I also like to mix it up - I’ll do one classic piece but everything else I wear will be more eclectic. I also like to do things like wear traditional Indian jewelry with western outfits. Just keep things interesting!

Looking at my own collection to date, I guess I am leaning more timeless/classical rather than advant-garde/weird.

DK :))

I'm pretty much a minimalist when it comes to jewelry so I'm my classic/not-out-there. While I really love some
out-there pieces I just feel like I cant get enough wear out of them to make them worth owning. Classic and traditional
(or not-out-there) tend to work with a lot of outfits and for various events.

If I was wealthy and could give over my minimalist mindset, I would own both!

I definitely lean towards classic and timeless though I was probably more into unique or out there (along with fads) when I was young. To me, it seems age related though I'm not really sure why.

I think it is age related @seaurchin. Tastes change and evolve over time and almost become more refined and classic. I prefer simplistic things now but remember being wowed in younger years by some unconventional things that I no longer own.
At whatever stage you are in, buy what makes you happy!!

While I can appreciate “out there” pieces, I am very ”classic” in my own collection. I figure timeless pieces are named so for a reason!

I appreciate the versatility of classics but they never get my heart the same way a real weirdo piece does! I have to admit, I like that feeling of “only I would like this!”

my pieces i brought myself pre_PS are mostly from the mall jewler and they do sell a lot of classic styles
but the pieces i wear the most are the more kooky ones
even when i look back to the 90's, when jewlery at the chain jewlers was still made in NZ, my coctail ring and my choker are unusual enough to still be of interest to me

edited to add im 51 and really glad i did not sell that coctail ring a few years back when i needed cash in a hurry for a Bruce Springsteen ticket

More often than not, I choose jewelry that is vintage or otherwise distinctive to my eyes. I do enjoy the classics, and I have a few standbys in my jewelry chest: a Tiffany "Harmony" solitaire, a platinum three-stone diamond ring by DK, a hammered silver bangle bracelet that I've worn every single day for the past 19.5 years. Besides the bracelet, I wear my simple, classic pieces whenever my eyes need a rest—and then, inevitably, I sprint back to my rings made special by their milgrain, pavé, engraving, chasing, carving, and/or swirly organic forms.

I have classics - diamond studs, solitaire and halo white gemstone rings, and my skinny pear white topaz and diamond dangle earrings which are classic with a little edge.

I'm done with classic, and I gravitate towards "classic with a twist" or more "out there" pieces at this point. My collection is and will remain fairly minimalist, so I want to have and wear what speaks to me.

I cannot really answer this with a few words.
At heart I am a minimalist.

I love both classic and unique pieces.
I love and appreciate it all even if it might not be something I would wear.

A purist would say is anything truly unique when it comes to jewelry design.

If I had to label my preferences I would say I prefer pieces that are a bit different.
Certainly not considered classics but not unique either as there is very little that is unique IMO
I never buy anything with an eye to other's preferences or future value.
I always buy just for me and what I love.

Just the way I purchase anything actually. My homes, my wardrobe, my toys. All based on what I love and has nothing to do with resale or what other's preferences are. My motto here is be you, do you, for you. And you will never regret IMO

Fine jewellery is very expensive, that puts pressure on me to have a very classic and timeless collection so I can get my money’s worth. I do also love ‘out there’ jewellery and collect ethnic silver too. Some of these pieces are wearable, others are just for display

I love out there pieces but they are unwearable and pricey so I just admire them quietly.

As much as I would love to venture out more, classic and timeless is pretty much my standard. Part of that is the wearability, I can get more wear out of an eternity band than a more eye-catching, unusual piece.
