Okay, our diamond had come loose from its prongs, we took it in to have it tightened, when it was picked up, the diamond looked a little cloudy or darker than usual. What can cause something like this? I wasn''t with my fiance when she took it unfortunately. So I haven''t had a chance to talk to the jewelers myself yet. Could it just be a dirty diamond?? It was always a pretty clear diamond, but now it looks a little bit dark. Could it be the way its sitting in the setting?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

The stone was probably burnt. If the jeweler does not protect the stone during welding (which probably has been done on or near the prongs, as it is customary during making or repairing a ring) effectively, then the heat from welding burns the stone. This is a common fate for melee diamonds in mountings with pave or other little stones attached. To burn the center stone? well, any jeweler should avoid this and you can probably make a case with your insurance company. Show the stone to a third party: I have not seen it, so, even if the info above is ok, it might still not apply to you. I doubt pictures would help.

How can you tell if your diamond has been burned? i think i am just paranoid, but im really starting to worry. even since i got prong work done, i swear my diamond does not look the same.

If you think your diamond looks different you should get it checked out! Just to be on the safe side! If someone did something to my diamond I would know it in a secound....I mean you just know your stone well because you see it all the time! Go with your gut...if something looks different, it very well could be...best of luck, keep us posted!

A quick test at home to see if the diamond has burnt facets:

Take a pointer or a needle and GENTLY scratch the facets you suspect may be burnt. Normal facets feel smooth, burnt facets feel waxy and uneven. NOTE: by scratching a burnt surface, you will leave tiny scratchmarks. If the diamond is not burnt, a gentle needle will not damage it. If it is burnt, you may want to have it repolished anyways, so you may not care about tiny scratches from your needle.
