Hey I was wondering, I have this sterling silver ring that is flat on top and has my initial on it and I wanted to give it to my girlfriend for and engagement ring, how ever it doesn’t have a diamond on it so I was just curious if you could dip or coat a ring u already have. For instance, my sterling silver ring in white gold and place a diamond on it? If so would it cost more to do that or just to buy a ring? If some one could help me out with this that would be great.

I am just a consumer but I think you would be better buying another ring. If the diamond is set in silver, silver does not hold diamonds very well, unless it is just a chip you are setting. I think you can dip silver in rhodium and I know QVC sell a range of silver rings coated in platinum which are not very expensive. I know you said white gold but do not dip in yellow gold as it will soon wear through. A jeweller I know says in general a white gold ring dipped in rhodium should last two years until it needs re-dipped but people on newsboards have complained about it wearing through on the under finger side in a couple of months.

It may be good to just go for a small solitaire diamond ring in white gold, you can get ones which are illusion set to make the diamond look bigger. (If this is the budget you are considering). If you are being sentimental then you could give her the signet ring also, maybe to wear on a 'Strong' chain around her neck, and if it is your ring you may need to look at re-sizing it depending on the size of her fingers.

By the way white gold is usually dipped in rhodium to give it a shinier white look as white gold can have a yellow tint to it unless you get the less frequently seen white gold which is alloyed with palladium. (I am assuming you know that white gold is made with yellow gold and white alloys such as silver, nickel, palladium. Gold does not come out of the earth as white - only yellow).

well i was just wanting a little diamond, nothing big.. i think that the sentimental value is way bigger and more appreciated than the huge diamond when u are asking her to marry you. but i didnt know if you could set it in there if you wanted to, if it was even possible. beacause i m kina of new at this diamond stuff so ne help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
