CBS4 News) SALT LAKE CITY, UT CBS4.COM has found a bizarre fashion ornament that’ll make your skin crawl. Crystal-studded brooches made from living Madagascar hissing cockroaches, complete with little gold-chain leashes.
These living brooches, that are really roaches, are created by Salt Lake City fashion designer Jared Gold.
The avant garde designer was inspired to make live brooches when he learned that cockroaches are often kept pinned to corks as pets in Mexico and South American countries.
It took a month of experimentation with clasps and adhesives to finally get the right design.
He uses only sterilized male insects, studded with real Austrian Swarovski crystals. “They come in all sorts of colors and each roach has his own little pattern on them so they’re all individual”, says Gold.
His company buys insects from a breeder in Los Angeles. A co-worker actually sticks the crystals to the back of every bug. It’s a painstaking task that involves what he calls, "a secret process."
Then the bejeweled bugs are sent to customers along with instructions. Feeding? Banana bits and water. Cage? A warm, dark place.
They go for about $40.00 each and have an expected lifespan of up to a year.
Gold says they''re selling like hotcakes. But, what will animals rights activists say?
Gold says, "its funny everybody asks that and the reality is...to PETA, it''s just a bug, they''re vermin really and we just kind give them a new texture. What we do to them in no way injures them or harms them. They live very great lives eating really good food and riding around on fabulous people."
Gold has been selling the roaches since last October.
