CBS4 News) SALT LAKE CITY, UT CBS4.COM has found a bizarre fashion ornament that’ll make your skin crawl. Crystal-studded brooches made from living Madagascar hissing cockroaches, complete with little gold-chain leashes.

These living brooches, that are really roaches, are created by Salt Lake City fashion designer Jared Gold.

The avant garde designer was inspired to make live brooches when he learned that cockroaches are often kept pinned to corks as pets in Mexico and South American countries.

It took a month of experimentation with clasps and adhesives to finally get the right design.

He uses only sterilized male insects, studded with real Austrian Swarovski crystals. “They come in all sorts of colors and each roach has his own little pattern on them so they’re all individual”, says Gold.

His company buys insects from a breeder in Los Angeles. A co-worker actually sticks the crystals to the back of every bug. It’s a painstaking task that involves what he calls, "a secret process."

Then the bejeweled bugs are sent to customers along with instructions. Feeding? Banana bits and water. Cage? A warm, dark place.

They go for about $40.00 each and have an expected lifespan of up to a year.

Gold says they''re selling like hotcakes. But, what will animals rights activists say?

Gold says, "its funny everybody asks that and the reality is...to PETA, it''s just a bug, they''re vermin really and we just kind give them a new texture. What we do to them in no way injures them or harms them. They live very great lives eating really good food and riding around on fabulous people."

Gold has been selling the roaches since last October.

And if you want a visual

Ewww ewwww ewww!

NASTY...

Guy has TOO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS. That is my first thought, after wanting to hurl.

Second, unless this type of roach is more delicate, why only one year? Roaches can SURVIVE anything!

This was on the news a few weeks back. People will do just about anything to make a buck. Gross

It appears they are popularbecuase the price is now 80 bucks on his website instead of the forty listed in the article.

Bleh.

The contestants on one of the America''s Next Top Models had to do a runway show with jeweled cockroaches and most of them freaked out. I wonder if they were made by the same company. I hope that only one is making them and that it doesn''t turn into a trend!

Okey doke. One word, YUCK!!!!!

That''s just icky.

Fear Factor usually uses these roaches in their critter stunts and eating challenges. I always have to turn the channel, it''s so disgusting.

You would have to pay me a heck of a lot more $$$$$ then that to let one of those things on my body...ehhh!

That is the most disgusting thing ever!

That is just all kinds of disgusting. Seriously. I lived in Houston for 5.5 years and the two things I just could NOT handle were the heat and the freaking roaches. Everywhere. The thought of someone actually buying one to wear on themselves makes my skin crawl. Ain''t no amount of swarovski crystals gonna make that thing pretty. Nuh-uh!!

Although...there was a (very very odd) girl at my high school who had pet cockroaches. She used to keep them in her locker (in a cage) and every so often get them out and like put them on her head or shoulder at random times, for the sole purpose of freaking people out. It worked. YUCK.

A little vomit just came up, GROSS!

Nice avatar Madame!

Except for the fact they are roaches.....

What an interesting concept to have moving jewelry.

Then again, I wear my watch everyday but don''t wear a broach but MAYBE once a month. I would surely put in away and forget I am supposed to feed it. I doubt most people give it the care it requires to live for a full year. Especially because when you''re not wearing it you have to ''stake'' it to something so you don''t lose it. How is it to care for itself?

Not too bright if you ask me!

Eewwww Sick!

I can just see it now ... Michael Jackson pining one on his pajamma shirt~!

So ... do they make them wear lil'' diapers too? What goes in must come out~!

I think someone fell out of the Cuckoo''s nest!
