Cocktail rings and statement rings

Where is the best place to find some really nice cocktail and statement rings? I'm looking for one to give as a present, and I'm not sure if it's a good idea to buy one for someone in case they don't like the design. What are your thoughts?

I'm a pretty picky person, and I would much rather someone gave me a gift certificate or something like that, rather than buying the ring for me. I need to be able to choose all my jewelry myself. I't's just so personal and I'll be wearing it for the rest of my life.
