Hi! I''m a big time newbie, and have spent the last couple of days lurking. I''ve been looking at this ring online for the last few months, and have been unable to see it in person as it is a "custom design."

I want it in 18K yellow gold (I''m not white, and I can really work yellow gold), and I have a couple of options for the center diamond, which is emerald cut.

I can get the emerald diamond in VS1 (I), or in VS2 (H), or for a couple hundred more could get VS1 (H). What do you guys think? Will it really matter colorwise because I will be using yellow gold?

What do you think about the ring in general? I''m a complete novice, and won''t be able to see the ring in person before I buy!

Hi there! Welcome to Pricescope!!

I would go with the H VS2 provided you can make certain it is eye-clean clarity - a little trickier in those step-cuts. Where are you thinking of buying the diamond from? Can you see these stones in person or trust the seller to sell a visually inclusion-free stone?

On the other hand, have you looked at stones on your own? Can you personally see a color difference between H and I? The brilliant cuts can "hide" color better than step-cuts, so if you''re color-sensitive, the I color EC might look pretty yellow to you.

Hope that helps!

There is nothing really custom about the ring , kind of a standard design.

Just my 2 cents

I haven''t been able to find that design anywhere else, and I''ve really been looking! Could you suggest anywhere else that I might find that design? Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it

not sure if you would be able to detect the difference between "h" and "i"......you really need to see the stones yourself to know how you would perceive the color. as far as the ring, i would highly recommend trying it on. this is potentially, a very big purchase that you will have to live with for a long time....you want to be happy with it. what is the return policy? maybe you could have the mount sent to try on before you have the stone set?

Will you be ordering it from them? Or getting someone else to make it? If you''re ordering from them just make sure you check the specs of the stone they are offering you (or do you buy the centre separately - sorry, I might be confused, I just looked very briefly) and make sure it''s a good stone especially cut-wise!

Unfortunately sometimes you just have to go for it, without having seen it, so if you love it then go for it. But keep their return policy in mind ... sometimes things that look beautiful on screen might not suit you in person ... See what they''ll do for you.

With an emerald cut I''d go for the H-VS1 if you can swing it. Colour and inclusions are more noticeable in an EC than a RB so you can''t afford to go as low as you might go with a round. (The extra sparkles and facets help to hide inclusions and any yellow tinges.) I fear going too much lower might show visible inclusions or a yellowness that might bother you. But have a look at some I-VS2 ECs to see what you think of them.

Thank you for your help. I will be getting it from Sun Jewelry. When I voiced my concern about the color, the jeweler told me that because I''m using 18K yellow gold, no matter what I do the diamonds will have a somewhat yellow cast to them, so the color isn''t going to matter as much. I too am leaning towards H, VS1, though.

I''m seriously considering just buying the setting-- that way if I hate the ring, I''ll be minimizing the damage (they have a 30 day return policy, too).
