Color of Mounting Affecting S-T OEC

I recently bought a GIA graded OEC (S-T VS2) set in a platinum mounting. After reading lots of past discussions on here, and the vendor’s recommendation, I decided to experiment. I mostly wear platinum and white gold, so was reluctant to commit to a yellow gold mounting. Yesterday my local jewelry used 22k yellow gold to plate the platinum mounting. Cost was $42.00. I have to admit, I like the stone better in the yellow gold colored mounting.

Here are before and after, for science. 1C375C12-79F9-4C51-A91F-B77AF3804648.jpeg

The ratio of visible setting to visible diamond is very small so the settings contrast is not going to have very much impact either way.

edit: Sorry that sounded harsh.
Thank you for the images and it was interesting.
Enjoy your lovely ring!!!!!!!

It may be the lighting of the photos, but I also prefer your beautiful diamond in the yellow gold. It's gorgeous, either way.

Love the yellow gold!

I like both settings, but the yellow seems to bring out the contrast in the stone. What fun that must be to wear. It's lovely!

What a beautiful stone! I think it looks lovely in both colors but yellow gold is becoming my color of choice.

have to admit, I like the stone better in the yellow gold colored mounting.
I think you have answered your own question. I'm actually a fan of warm stones in yellow gold, so I'd probably always prefer that, but again, you seem to have answered your own question. What matters is what you like best.

Hubba hubba, I love it!

I love it and can we get a peek of the two toned band you are stacking it with?

Oh my gosh what a gorgeous ring! Im drooling. I like it both ways. I would have a tough time deciding. I’m kind of intrigued by the fact that you still have the platinum heft with the yellow gold color. Im curious as to how that plating will wear. Do keep us updated.

Yellow is my jam!
Your stone looks amazing in it. Lordt, that's a rock, baby!:lickout:
Did I miss this?! I admit my memory is shot, but still.
This is cruel and unusual punishment without hand shots!

Love it in the yellow! Good call!

As am I, curious how the plating will wear. $42/year for platinum mount strength with gold color seems like a no-brainer!

Yes, I will post more pics tomorrow. I am terrible—I like to find a band to go with all of the different rings I wear on my e-ring finger, so I have a wardrobe!

You may well be right! I give you trade folks lots 0f leeway to be brusque because I value your insight. Thanks for weighing in!

I’ve always had my eye out for a two toned band where the band is white, and the flowers are gold. Or vice versa. Very specific and very hard to find.

Thank you for sharing your experiment and gorgeous OEC. I too prefer it in yellow gold but honestly, it's beautiful either way!

Looks gorg either way!

Did they have to unmount the stone to plate the setting?

Interesting! Glad you like the plating effect.

FWIW the comparison photos are not true comparisons, since the lighting, angle and positioning (on finger, off finger, close-up, far away) are not identical -- a photo of the gold-plated ring on your finger would make for a better comparison.

I also wonder if the platinum prongs and metal underneath the OEC was plated yellow gold.

Good points, re the lighting. And yes, the entire ring was plated.

This is a vice versa. I found it on EBTH.com89B99566-7009-404E-9EED-B657A3732A6A.jpeg

Gah! IT's so perfect! I bought one once, but it was too skinny and it blended to where I couldn't really see the contrast so I returned it.

Edit - I have never heard of this site before so time to look!

Be warned. It’s dangerous! Like eBay in the 1990s.

I love that in yellow gold. Diamonds can have a very subtle (or not no subtle) undertone that makes one color of metal more flattering than others. I always let a diamond "pick" the color of metal it looks best in. I have an uncerted J that definitely is a yellow gold stone.

Oh just dropping in to say I love and adore the color!
