Not too long ago, I posted about my new yellow diamond ring. I still love it, but have observed a couple traits it has, and wanted to see if anyone could explain what's up to me.

Firstly- I was playing around with my CS and a UV, and decided to look at the yellow diamond too. It gives green/blue under longwave. But I noticed that for like 5 seconds after I turn off the UV lamp, it glows orange in the dark. Of course this was amazing to me, so I kept doing it for a while.

Then, secondly- after I was done playing with the light, I went to the kitchen and was shocked that my yellow diamond had gotten golder/browner/orangier when I was playing with it. ...or I burned my eyeballs playing with a UV light. I did get some pictures that show a very subtle color shift though, but it is very noticable to me irl.

Are there any colored diamond experts who could explain these phenomenon to me? I can't find much on phosphorescence in natural diamonds or anything on color shift. Thanks in advance!

Sadly, I can’t offer an educated answer on this, maybe someone else will see the post and be able to comment something more. Your stone has faint fluorescence which can affect a stone in different light settings. That would be my guess but not sure.

Fancy colored diamonds have a mind of their own sometimes. Mine has no fluorescence, I see different variants of gray and green depending on the day and lighting. It’s hard to capture in pictures. Here is one where mine looks more green and then one where it looks more gray80985A19-6ACA-406B-B923-07EE193F1DD7.jpegED8B91F9-553F-4CF2-9F99-3603BE53C8E7.jpeg

@SandraLynn Your ring is so pretty! I love how it changes in different light. The grey/green difference is so noticeable in pictures. Are those pink diamonds in the halo & band?

I'm thinking what's happening with mine is fluorescence under LWUV & short lived phosphorescence as soon as I remove it, but (I guess being a sciencey person) I just want to know what's happening precisely. Still trying to figure out the mild tenebrescence-like effect that lasts after the UV, but the internet has failed me in that so far. In the meantime I'm thinking of getting a SWUV so no one gets angry when my habits inevitably kill the scorpion catching light.

Inclined to agree -- that's really cool and a fun "feature."

There have been other threads on this:

@shelovesinclusions see I was hoping someone else would comment. She glows, that’s for sure. I see you have picked a band. I like it.

Yes the halo is fancy light pink. The band diamonds are pink/purple/ brown ( and one light yellow) it was not advertised as fancy but I think that’s because there’s a couple of them that might not be but most of them definitely are. Or it was an oversight. Not sure C843CEAF-64E8-4192-A78F-6BF731BDF960.jpeg

@shelovesinclusions ... I see you have picked a band. I like it. ...

Yeah, so my mom came to visit and her reaction to my new ring was kinda "hm, a yellow diamond. I never would have thought people wear those lower colors. And why don't you have a band?" I felt like I should find one asap after that, so got a moissanite 10k one until I find what I really want (a 1.8-2mm wide icy apple green jadeite, carved in some way).

In the meantime, I was also gifted my great grandma's OEC ring from ~1890. I think my mom might have felt bad that I didn't have any white diamonds of my own (D-E are her faves). It's been a lucky year for me with stones.

I totally get that. Some people feel that way. I often think when people in public see my center stone, at work or checking out at a store somewhere that they think my stone is just crappy quality because they don’t know about fancy colored diamonds and gray is not desired A lot. I’m sure for that reason. . I try not to get overly concerned with what others say. Is that the ring in your profile picture, I noticed you changed it. what are the specs. I have a .82 G VS2 early round brilliant that was my great great grandmothers but it was bought later in life after her husband made more money. Do you plan to keep it in the setting or do something else with it?

Manganese fluoresces yellow and orange. I hypothesize your yellow diamond may have trace amounts of manganese.

Yeah, there are many who think diamonds = white and that the only white stones are diamonds. I love the grey/green you showed. I wonder if it gets looks because people wonder what it is.

It is so cool you have a great-grandma's ring too! I think I'll be keeping mine as-is. Is yours like a combination cut in the early round brilliant? Does it have a larger culet? Do you have pictures?

I don't know much about mine. I think it's about .80-.90 carats based on the size, and it is surprisingly clean under even 60x. It did look like it had a residue on it when it first came to me, so I did a crazy deep clean on it, and it looks close to colorless, but I need to get an appraisal done.

Ok so about your mom... :lol-2:

Man, oh man, I know. I could go on regarding her thoughts on fancy colored sapphires. The lady has a very particular definition of quality jewelry.

Edit: and not green jade.

Maybe either way, I’ve always liked thing a bit different from the norm. I get crazy about cleaning my rings too. Especially my gray diamond if it do t keep it clean it looks like a pebble. Lol I do have some pics of my grandmothers stone. I took it out of the original setting. Brian Gavin did the reset.
