Hi all-

My boyfriend recently proposed with this .75 ct center E colorless diamond. It’s rose gold (which is what I thought I wanted). However, I’ve recently read articles that say it’s a “waste” to set a colorless diamond in rose or yellow gold because it makes the stone look warmer. Now I’m considering resetting in white gold (also more timeless look). Curious your thoughts on setting colorless diamonds in rose gold. Thanks!

I’m not an expert at all, but I think it looks so pretty like it is! I don’t know anything about rose gold, though, so I’m no help. Just wanted to say it’s a beautiful ring!

I think it’s beautiful as is and your stone does not look warm at all!

I guess my question would be do you think it would be more of a “waste” to reset the diamonds in a different colored metal?

I think it looks great! I don’t really understand the “waste” thing. I actually think the white diamond really pops against the rose gold!

I think it’s the opposite. People who are choosing lower colored stones might go with rose gold so that the diamond looks whiter and the white metal doesn’t make it look too yellow.

No expert but my eyes tell me what you have looks great.

Count me as a vote to keep your setting as is, I think it looks great. And your stone looks perfect, & bright. I also agree with @KLE, the diamond--against the rose gold--helps amp up the colorless aspect of the diamond.

If you love it.. keep it! I think you're quite fortune to have the contrast between diamond and rose gold.

I think it looks beautiful. Stones are white and the rose gold complements your skin tone.

Agreed your ring looks great! I also chose a rose gold ring for my wife’s anniversary ring, with a G color which looks stunning even it’s a lower color than yours^^ So you have nothing to worry about~

A white metal in no way whatsoever would make the stone look too yellow in an E color.

The colorless stone doesn't need any amping up. It will look extremely colorless in a white metal.

The ring is very pretty. However, the colored metal can influence it, and I personally think for the premium your boyfriend paid for E color it really does it a disservice IMO. Yet if you really like it in rose gold you should keep it, but I can tell you don't like it. Yes, the white metal is more timeless. From my personal experience with an E, I have it set in white gold. I had platinum with a different diamond for many, many years and I am loving the white gold. It is so lustrous and bright, and it looks seamless with my E color diamond. And the white gold is less expensive that plat and lighter weight which is what you are used to. Just don't expose to cleaning products and chlorine and you will go a long time before having to replace it. I personally think white gold is better with a colorless diamond because plat does take on a certain patina that is not bright white. The only other suggestion I would make if you are in love with the rose gold is to have the prongs redone in white gold. But having the entire thing remade in white gold will be a "wow", more than it is now IMO and personal experience.

I love it the way it is  The stone doesn't look like any less than an E by virtue of being in a rose gold setting. And because they aren't amidst white metal, the stones really pop quite wondrously to my eye.

I personally don't consider rose gold to be a fad (my Victorian-era e-ring was emeralds and diamonds in a peachy-rose gold setting that was fabricated before platinum jewelry was even possible) & don't care if others think it is.

But your e-ring should bring a smile to your face & delight your heart. So if after wearing it for awhile -- for some of us, the newness of an e-ring worn daily takes some getting used to -- you're still wondering, my suggestion would be that you first "audition" an inexpensive cz and silver ring in a style as close as possible to your current ring. Wear that for some time to see how you feel about the different visual look before actually investing in a new white gold setting & removing the diamonds from their current home.

Pop into the Fabulous Fashion Jewelry forum for help in finding an inexpensive ring, should you decide to audition one (Rocky Talky is reserved for discussion of mined diamonds, so that's why I'm not making any suggestions for a cz-silver ring here):

P.S. The ring has perfect proportions, your hand sets it off to great advantage (I envy those who don't have stubby fingers), love the nail polish!

I personally think that d e F stones are so versatile because you don't need to worry about the metal. They'll always look white and pop.
I really love your setting. But it sounds like you have doubts. If you aren't satisfied, by all means change it. I just don't think the colour of the metal is anything but personal preference for colourless range stones

Disclaimer: I'm totally biased, I have an F oval with side pears in a reverse taper knife edge in platinum and still love it to pieces 15 years later.

I think it looks amazing and so stunning and if you are a rose gold lover you should keep it as is.But in white gold those stones would look even brighter and more timeless.

+1 to this idea if you want to reset but like the rose gold :)

+2 to this idea if you think the RG will bother you It I think it’s just lovely. Rose gold is just as timeless, it’s just not as common as WG in the US. RG isn’t some new trend - it’s a bit older than white gold which only came around as a cheaper alternative to platinum in the 1990’s. You won’t have to replate rose gold and it’s actually the strongest gold alloy, the copper makes RG a bit stronger than other gold alloys.

Rose gold has a long tradition - search for Russian gold and you’ll find many, lovely antique pieces from Eastern Europe and Fabrege.

I meant people would more likely put a K (lower color, maybe I said that backward?) in rose gold - from what I’ve understood - to make it look less yellow. I was in no way saying an E stone needed help looking white.

I think it's beautiful. If it were mine, I'd keep the rose gold band and substitute a white gold head so there was nothing competing with the colorless diamonds. Best of both worlds.

@Newlyengaged111 -

Your ring is SO beautiful - would you mind sharing the stats of all 3 stones and your finger size? It's very helpful for people looking to ge a sense of proportion for their own projects, which is one of the great uses of PriceScope.

Thank you!

Thanks so much for all of your kind words. I do love the rose gold, but I also love white gold generally. I just want to maximize the beauty of the stones my wonderful fiancé picked out. I like the idea of making prongs white gold. The ring sits on rose gold baskets though, so not sure I could just change prongs without changing basket. I may just keep as is!

Center is .75ct, e, VVS2, and I believe side stones are around .25 each (I don’t know exact size, sorry!) I think jeweler got them to match. Size 6 finger.

Congratulations, your ring is gorgeous! I think the rose gold amps up the colorless diamonds and also makes them look as though they are floating on your finger. The prongs are so tiny they aren’t very noticeable. Beautiful!

I really love it the way it is!!! The rose gold actually adds to it making it a bit more unique. I refused to wear rose gold for a long time thinking it looks terrible on me. Now I found the right alloy and absolutely love it and am making a lot of rings in rose gold now. While it is true that rose gold will help mask tint in lower colors, it will not do anything negative to a high color stone, due to the contrast your stone’s color may even pop a bit more. I am not a two tone person, I would not change anything but like many things this is subjective too.

I’m biased! I have yellow gold and love love love it. It looks better on my skin tone as well. I get compliments on it often as well. The rose gold does not seem to add color to your diamond at all. It looks fantastic. Go with what you love and what suits your skin tone. I did not want to have to deal with any hassle associated with maintaining white gold or platinum because I am lazy. Many of my friends have dark looking white gold or platinum rings due to lack of maintenance

i fell in love with a warmer gold when I visited some cathedrals in Barcelona. The diamonds in yellow and warmer gold tones were beautiful and timeless and the Diamonds did not look yellow at all.

if you have doubts go try on some rings at a store and compare! Otherwise go with your instinct. Everyone has a different preference. I think your ring is beautiful

Thanks for those stats, @Newlyengaged111 :))

Yes, you can leave the basket as is and just change the prongs. Here's a ring of mine where I did just that. I'm sure a range of jewelers do it, but if you decide to go that route, make sure they do lovely, fine claws for you, So it would need to be someone experienced in that.

If you need the name of a jeweler, let me know - we have members everywhere and can find a way forward for you if you decide to go that route.

And here's my ring in all yellow gold with white gold prongs; it's also a good example of very nicely done claws. They're more sculptural than the regular blob prongs and tend to look more intentional and have a stronger design element. In the final image, you can see that the arms leading up to the prongs are yellow gold - it's just the tips that are white and, as a result, are far less noticeable.
