Comment on this Pearl Necklace?

I have been collecting precious gems, stamps, coins, paintings and jewellery when I was 12 now I am 28. I would like to know some comments on this pearl necklace. It is heavy in weight.

Not sure what sort of comments you are looking for, but there are several things that make a pearl more expensive.




First off, it they are NATURAL pearls, meaning there was absolutely no human invlovement in their formation, that would be one very pricey necklace there.




Two, their shape is usually crucial when considering cultured pearls, as most of them are. Natural pearls are so rare and few now a days that it's almost a moot point wondering if they are natural or cultured.




Most likely they are cultured. The closest to round, the better. Also something to consider is HOW they were cultured, and WHERE....Tahitian, Freshwater mussel pearls, Saltwater oyster pearls, Akoya, Mabe pearls or Blister or Shell pearls, Baroque pearls (not perfectly round pearls), etc...(these all have a pricing scheme attached to each)




Thirdly, their diameter determines their price point as well. Of course, smaller pearls take a shorter time to develop, and can be made quciker and more abundantly. Larger pearls, more nacre, more time, more expense, higher price.




Nacre and the millimeters of it are also crucial. Also, determine from an appraiser if they are pearls that were cultured with pearl inside or some may just be plastic with nacre coating. I assume weight and testing will show such things.




Fifth, and importantly, is the lustre (or orient) of the pearl.and how it is evenly distributed, as well as how much there is of it. These are the irridescent colors of the pearl caused by overlapping platelets of aragonite and film of conchiolin near the pearl's surface. If the pearl is spotty, then it will look irregularly distributed and not as costly as a more perfect distribution.




A pearl alone is difficult to examine, so a strand of pearls should really be checked out by a pro. Also, it seems this is just a simple strung strand, that was never a necklace. Usually when they are beaded for necklaces, they use a heavy silk thread, knotting each pearl in place, and then creating a clasping system for the pearls to be removed easily, without fear of pulling or breaking the string. They thread them and knot each pearl into place, just in case it breaks, they all don't go flying off, as well as giving each pearl it's room to move without stratching neighboring pearls. Note that pearls have a soft hardness, of a 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs Scale.




In my very unprofessional estimation, these pearls could be Baroque pearls, possibly freshwater pearls, with fairly good nacre, decently good orient (though not all that even) and may be possibly from China.




Note that you should NEVER keep pearls in a completely air tight environment. They require a bit of humidity to remain well kept, so a safety deposit box or locker is the WORST place to sotre them. Try a soft silk pouch and then in a wooden box, or something of the sort. Also, certain chemicals like perfumes and sweat can corrode them, so always wipe them clean after use, never spray anything directly on them, and only wash them with warm soap and water every once in a while. Also, it's necessary to restring them yearly, if you wear them often. Good luck and let us know what you find out about them!!!

very much for your detailed explanation. I also dont know what this pearl is like and does it has any value. It nice looking It nice looking , shining with some pink , white, silky colors in it and is kept in a safe place . It is also heavy to handle not like other fake pearls where it is light in weight. But still I have to undergo some test to check its whether it is natural or cultures pearls.

Sitll, any pearl experts like to comment on this are welcome ....
