Compact, Discreet Jewelry Storage

Hi,

I have recently found these boxes for storing jewelry and I think they're fantastic (especially for earrings) so I wanted to share.

I don't have much space at home and I'm also very wary of burglars, so my focus is on compact and discreet storage. These boxes might suit others who have the same priorities when it comes to storing jewelry. They hold a lot of jewelry and can be hidden easily if you're going out of town. I have transported jewelry in them if taking something to the jeweler's because they fit so easy in a purse. Best of all, I don't have space on my dresser taken up by the much larger boxes that the items came in originally.

This first box is from Crate and Barrel, and is really small. The compartments are just big enough for stud earrings or small drops - or you can put larger earrings in, one in each compartment. It's sturdy with good snaps.

The second box is from Muji. It's longer, but the really great thing about this box is that the compartments inside are adjustable. So you can take out all the width-way dividers inside and just have two long compartments, for bracelets or watches, or you can have lots of really small compartments, or some small and some large.

I've been organizing my jewelry in these boxes and have found them to be incredibly useful, so I thought other jewelry-lovers might like them too. I line the little compartments with small bits of tissue so the jewelry doesn't bounce around and get scratched.

I love Muji, my jewelry box is from there...those plastic cases look really handy. Think it's about time to make another trip. Thanks for the reminder. :)

They're good, aren't they? Here's how I use mine (see pics below). I have a total of about 57 compartments here. Can you imagine how much space that would take up if all the jewelry was stored in the original boxes??

The plastic cases with individual snap-shut lids are great for loose stones, as well.

Safest bet is not to keep everything under one roof, especially if you are worried about burglars. Same concept as when you travel--don't keep all your cash in one place on your person.

Yeah, those are good principles. I have thought about a bank box, but in my local Bank of America the boxes are right there and can be seen from the main floor - they're just behind one transparent door. In my apt building there's an outer door, and inner door, and then the front door to the apt. I don't know anything about bank boxes but somehow I thought they'd be in a really secure vault, behind a huge door with a wheel, and/or underground. Or maybe I've just watched too many movies!

I have a bunch of Bed, Bath and Beyond drawer dividers for my routine silver and costume jewelry and a nice little case with inserts to hold about 20 of those round plastic gem boxes with individual unset stones. But for the REALLY good stuff, I have an anonymous-looking cardboard box about the size of a book on my shelf, marked "garnets." In pencil. If I had the Graff ruby, I would take it down to my local Beaux Arts landmark bank, where the safe deposit boxes are indeed in a basement vault that looks like a Roman bath, behind one of those old-fashioned safe doors, with the glassed-in mechanisms you see in movies. Just outside the vault there is an antechamber with a collection of private conference rooms of various sizes with elegant old built-in desks and lamps. Makes me feel rich to visit my documents there.

I have a similar box for my loose stones.

They sell craft supply and fishing lure plastic boxes like that, too, at places like WalMart. I put my daughter's jewelry in one to organize her costume jewelry for college.
