Comparing Ovals

Hi everyone. My boyfriend and I are looking at buying a center diamond for what will (hopefully soon ;) ) be my engagement ring. I have two round side diamonds already. One from my grandmother and one from my mother. Both are very similar in size at about .4ct each. We are looking at getting an oval diamond (I want something a little different from the rounds that everyone always gets) in the 1.0ct to 1.2ct range. We've been looking online and there are so many diamonds and so many numbers to look at that they're all starting to run together. We think we have found a couple that we like based simply on their numbers and would like to know if they do in fact seem to be decent diamonds. I know nothing will be better than seeing it in person (especially with ovals and their bow ties), but if we don't like what we see, we can always send it back and get another one. We are going simply by numbers alone at the moment...

We need pics/images/asets to evalute fancy cut stones. Do you links to these stones? We can really give you much
without more info. :(sad

I highly recommend looking at ovals in person. The stats tell you almost nothing about how they will look and sparkle. I looked at about eight stones in a B&M store and knew mine when I saw it.

I could post links, but it really wouldn't do any good (plus I am on my iPhone at the moment and don't have them handy). There are only sample images on the website, not images of the actual stones. And as far as looking in person, we have determined that we are going to get more diamond for our money if we go with one of the online wholesalers. We are looking at Union Diamond based on reviews, BBB rating, etc.

I guess maybe now the question would be are there any crown/pavilion numbers that might happen to help pick one with a minimal bow tie?

Ok now that I'm on my computer I can post the links, but like I said, I really don't think they'll do that much good other than allowing you to see the certification.

Ok everyone, disregard all of my questions completely. I made my final decision to go with a 1.01 round brilliant instead and we just purchased. :) I kept having this nagging feeling that a round would be better for the settings that I liked at the jeweler. For an oval, they would have had to cut the top of the setting off and change it to an oval and the more I thought about it, the less I liked that idea. So thanks for looking and reading, but we're good now!

Britney, if your both trying to save money by buying online, it really helps to work with a vendor who can give you pictures and Aset images. Great ovals, like all fancy cuts, are notoriously difficult to find - made even more difficult by the fact you can't see it. It helps to get as much info as you can, so you can increase your chances of a beautiful one once you send it to your home. Hopefully there's a Union rep who can at least describe it's eye cleaniness and how it performs to you.

The cost of paying out of your pocket to inspect/verify its grading locally, and then the cost to ship it back with insurance = not cheap and eats into your budget. You might want to price out how much it'd cost from your area. It's tempting, once you have a stone, any stone, in hand, not to send it back and accept it for what it is.... not that that's always a bad thing. :)

ETA - I just saw your post. Great to hear! I hope you take pictures for us.
