Hi everyone, it's been over a year since I promised to take pics of an old european cut that my grand mother was kind enough to leave me, my asscher (with trap sides) engagement ring and my wonderful princess solitaire from Infinity which was my 40ieth birthday present from my sweet husband.
This a combined topic because I also want to say how delighted I am with the AGS 000 princess I have. I picked it up from Infinity in Antwerp (thanks again Paul) a whole year ago and it is only now that it has finallly been set to my liking and the specifications. Jeweller from hell and long distance to boot.... that's a whole other story so we won't go there!!!
Specs of all three first:
* Princess (from Infinity) AGS 000 - ideal (one of the very first), 6.08x6.08x4.77 (a deep stone), J colour, 1.43 carats, VVS2
* Asscher/modified em cut (from NiceIce), GIA excellent cut, polish, symmetry, exact dimensions on cert in bank but it's 6x6mm, E colour, 1.17 carats, VVS1 with two traps on the side
* OEC, 8mm diameter, not a great cut under the ideal scope/leakage in the middle, J colour, low clarity SI1, 1.20 carats (the evaluation was done by Bonhams so there's no cert on it)
What I'd like to show is that although the Princess is 1.43 and has the same 6mm dimensions as the assscher, it appears waaay biggers. The depth means a whole lot of fire and since I think that the size it looks when on is more important than the size on paper, although it is deep, nothing has been sacrificed. It still seems much bigger than the asscher and performs like a firework display.
Another point about the Inifinity stone is that it is easier to set than many princesses since they shave the tiniest amount from the sharpnes of the corner, microscopic, you can't see it at all but it makes the corners less prone to fracture. The technique has been okayed by the AGS and stones cut this way qualify for the 'ideal' label (if they meet all the other parameters of course!).
Paul is very comfortable to work with, very professional but easy going and will help you through your decision with no pressure at all and lots of info if you want to know more.
The asscher is a lovey stone and I personally can see a clear diff in colur when the two are side by side. When they are on diff hands, the Princes is a right hand ring, then the diff in colour is not, to my eyes at least, apparent. My husband got the asscher from NiceIce but since he's french speaking, I had most of the contact with them. They were lovely to work with and I think I saw a recent post from Todd, I hope so. A genuinely good guy.
The asccher is set in platinum, the prin and the oec in white gold. For those interested in white gold and plat togther, I wear the prin as an engagment ring sometimes and my wedding band is in platinum. The white gold setting of the princess and the band look exactly the same. Over time that, perhaps, would change, but now there is no difference in colour.
For those wondering if the Js look okay set in a white metal: they look absolutely fine. I prefer them in white since yellow would reflect in the stone and, I think, highlight the colour.
Hokay.... now for a lot of pix, hope I don't bore you. Oh, for the record, my finger is a five something, to be honest I can't really remember. Medium sized, not long (unfortunately) but five going on six.
So lets' see if I can do this photo 'thang'...... okay, they're too big, I'll see if I can resize them. I'll post this to be going on with. More to come, promise (and this time sooner than in a year!)
