I am looking to pop the question but need to buy a ring. I can only afford something inbetween $1500 and $2000. I am currently traveling through S.Korea and I need some advice as to where I should buy and what I should buy so to get the best thing for my money. Please help!!! Thanks in advance-Novio

My EXACT advice is, get this stone:

Get this setting:

You will come in at just over $2k and have a beautiful ring. Not a big one, but it sure will shine!

I would recommend setting the diamond in a traditional tiffany setting in white gold. It should only cost around $150 instead of a platinum setting starting at $350.00 and then you can spend more on the diamond. Decide what shape she would like and try to stay within a SI1 and G-I grading. The best thing to do is try to find the best cut your money can buy and the overall look of the diamond will be fabulous.

Good Luck,

I agree with Gato!

Another thing to consider is will you upgrade in the future (either stone or setting)? If so, then definitely don't spend too much money on the setting, if you upgrade the setting in the future your original investment may be lost. If you plan to upgrade the stone, again..sometimes you cannot use the original setting if the size difference is huge (or you can get a new head). In any case, for a budget under $2k, I would spend 95% of the budget on the stone and get something really great, and then get a $200 white gold or $300 plat tiffany style setting or similar.

You can go to H or I color and SI1 clarity (maybe SI2 if you can get a guarantee that its eye clean) and get a bigger rock, concentrating on an excellent cut for max sparkle, fire, scint etc!

Running a quick search on Pscope, GoodOldGold has a bunch of brokered stones that are AGS 0 Hearts and Arrows with HCA scores under 2.0 (excellent) within your range. Two that caught my eye are a .66 G SI1 for about $1850 and a .70 I SI2 for about $1950.
