I have found a ring that I love! I actually purchased it, but unfortunately, the opal has a natural (divot?) in it and for the price, I am not willing to keep it. I will post a pic for you to see…. I have not designed a ring before so I’m hesitant to try it. I would have to purchase the opal and I’ve been looking at Black Opal Direct for a black opal. I’d prefer to stay under $4000.00 on the opal. I‘ve seen a lot of options, but if I can save some money here, I’d love to know your thoughts. Size should be about 13x8 to achieve the finished ring size i want. I have a ton of measurements and pictures of the ring which I think will help. I’ve gotten a quote from DK that I feel is fair for the setting. Is this worth pursuing? Does the opal ring look difficult to recreate? Any helpful suggestions I should be considering? I was also considering having CVB make a ring for me, which honestly seems a whole lot easier to me. If I did this option, it would be a rhodolite garnet in platinum. I’ll post a insp pic of that, as well. Which option would you pursue?

I think you made the right decision in returning the other opal. Surface imperfections on black opal aren't really accepted in the trade. I think if you go with the DK black opal project, what you're aiming for shouldn't be too difficult to achieve. Black Opal Direct is a great start. The garnet project with CVB is likewise beautiful. I feel like it may just be a matter of taste. :)

Thank you @Autumn in New England! I think just getting my thoughts down helped me to decide. I’m moving forward with the CVB ring.

I've posed questions here, and then made up my mind before even finishing my post. lol It absolutely does help to see options in black and white sometimes. Please be sure to keep us informed of this project's process... I'm really interested to see it come to life!

Looks like you already decided. I was going to say I love opals but hesitate to get an opal ring because opals are so soft. An opal pendant would be safer, I think. That garnet ring is gorgeous!

I will keep the opal in my inspo folder, I love them too! I hope to use one in the future. I think of them as more of a dinner ring than a daily wear ring. You’re probably spot on with the suggestion of a pendant

I always recommend pendants for Opal, not because of the softness but because the colour play and how it changes with different angles is sure to get the attention of everyone and be a conversation starter
