I think we need a bit more info before we can be helpful. What are you looking for? What is your budget? What's your preferred stone shape? Size?

Mastercut gems is a trusted vendor and people here have had many great experiences with them. Their photos seem very true to what you see "in real life", and they are always honest and quick to respond.

Budget around the $1K mark. Looking for around a 2 carat stone, darker blue preferably. Stone shape - very flexible on - but want to avoid the oval. The color is key at a royal blue. Will this, after setting, show up darker?

Royal blue will look very different (unless the photo is totally off) and cost much more.

Mastercut has a solid return policy. The stone has some inclusions but if those don't bother you, you should buy it and see what you think. I don't think it will darken enough to be 'royal' blue.

Not trying to sidetrack you, but here's a pretty blue spinel in your size and price range. Has a grey tone...

Here's another one that's just out of your price range. I've never bought from him but I believe plenty of PSer's have been happy with him.

@Cycadell Mastercut is a trusted vendor, and I don't think you can beat Mastercut's prices for value. If you're looking for a royal blue, however, those sapphires are at least $1000/ct and a 2-ct sapphire with premium color would be at least twice your stated $1k budget. Trust me, I've looked.

So, you can go with the sapphire you already found from Mastercut, which is a lovely color and good cut in itself, or you can go with a blue spinel if you care more about the color.

I have seen this stone in person and they have had this sapphire in their inventory for a while. I just checked my emails and I had ordered and returned it in late 2016 when they had it on sale at lower price. The color is a bright beautiful blue and the size is nice and big. The thing I could look past was the eye visible inclusions. When the light caught the inclusions, the were quite noticeable to my eye. If I remember correctly, the inclusion I could most clearly see was a white/clear line in natural light. If you aren't too particular about those type of inclusions, this one is worth taking a look at in person. The color and size would be hard to beat at that price. It is an included stone though. Mastercut is always understanding about returns and have no pressure approach.

Do you have an example photo of your ideal blue? You mention royal blue, but also that you want a dark blue. I think of royal blue as not necessarily dark blue. If you are looking for a darker navy blue like Kate’s ring, this is one to consider, make sure to watch the video:

I have also seen this stone in person and it’s a nice dark blue that doesn’t black out. Not one I would consider royal blue though.

That should have read, “The thing I couldn’t get past was the eye visible inclusions”. I posted in a hurry and forgot to proof read before posting, lol.

Thank you so much. I sincerely appreciate all your responses.

@suzanne2 : the etsy stone is definitely gorgeous and I'll follow up with the vendor.
@2Neezers : Thank you so much for the feedback on Mastercut's stone. I'm picky about visible inclusions so might have to give this one a skip. Rachelle is yet to send me more pictures and a video - will take a look.

All: thank you so much for the responses: I'll go ahead and explore some more and probably raise my budget and reduce my size requirement to get a nicer stone.

This is the kind of blue I'm after: https://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-blue-11-1296

P.S. forgot to add =I would ideally want to steer clear of any green/ purple / gray tints in the stone.

This is oval, but the color is wonderful.

I would ask them if they have anything else that might work for you. I don't know this company well, but I've heard good things and their reviews are good. Plus Etsy has good buyer protection.

Edit. The outside pics of this look like the perfect color, but direct light pics look lighter than what you want. Id request a video. https://www.etsy.com/listing/536051200/loose-blue-sapphire-natural-blue
