Quick question: how much should it cost to change the posts on a pair of 14k earrings, and, for that matter, is it *necessary* to change the posts, or can you just buy tension-backs and slide them over the original threaded posts? Thanks in advance, guys!

Shouldn''t be much, but you should change the posts otherwise the tension backs don''t slide properly (and if you push them too far in, it''s not at all nice on your ear when they are stuck there)

Find a good jeweler and request His/Her opinion. I am wondering wy you want to alter your earrings? If I knew I may be able to better direct you.

Confession time... I use a friction back on a threaded post. When I lost the original back, I had a hard time finding a new screwback that fit properly. So I took a friction back that had a very small hole, used a small plier to tighten it further and I now screw that on. It screws on without problems, but the friction back holds on very tightly.

The best thing you can do is take both earrings to your jeweler and have the posts replaced with the proper hardware.

In order to find the correct back you have to send the earring to the jeweler so He/She may find a back that will fit. They usually keep a number of findings in their shop and will be able to mach it up.

Finding a good jeweler would be step number two.

If I was back in NY, I''d know where to go, but out here in Cali, I''m noticing some, um, interesting pricing strategies (one guy wanted to charge me $50 bucks just to have a necklace dipped, at which point it was cheaper to just ship it home and have it done there), and I''d like to have a baseline before I decide.

As for why? Well, it takes a longish time to put them on/take them off, and I''ve heard that screwbacks can be dangerous if they snag on things, leading to earlobes tearing. That sounds decidely unpleasant to me!

I got a tension post stuck on my screw back post on my ear. It was fun getting that baby off. Can you return them to where you got them they might give you a deal.

Unless you want la pousette backs, it should be fairly inexpensive. I too, used to have screw backs and I got sooo tired of screwing the darn things on and off that I finally decided to switch to tension backs instead.

You really need to have the posts changed for security reasons - so you get that groove at the end of the posts which locks the backs in place and prevents the earrings from slipping off.
