Thinking about converting my 1ct F VS tiffany solitare to a 3 stone ring for my anniversary . Anyone have experience with that? They couldn't give me a quote in the store, and I need to send my ring in so they can match stones?

You could probably buy a three stone with a 1 carat center from IDJ for the cost that Tiffany would charge to remake your ring. And... you’d still have your Tiffany solitaire to swap out on days you wanted to be more solitire-y.

Totally agree with this!

OMG really? I was thinking 2 little 0.5 ct shouldn't cost all that much.... it's been 20 years since the purchase and really haven't looked at diamonds in a long long time. Hence why I'm here

Tiffany's prices are absurd for what they stock. They have good diamonds but you are largely paying for the brand name and experience. So I think if you want a quality 3 stone and don't need the tiffany branding you could find that elsewhere and keep your lovely solitaire as it is.

We were so young and dumb when we bought in the first time around lol. I actually have Tiffany studs that I bought a long time ago 2nd hand. Do you think they would set them in a three stone with 2nd hand tiffany earrings? Would likely be much cheaper this way. Really don't want to spend too much but since I am existing client would it be something they would do?

I’d just set them into a quality three stone and keep the original Tiffany mountings in case you ever want to revert.

Are the diamonds close in color?

Yes, both F VS1

Perfect!

I doubt Tiffany will reset the studs if you aren’t the original owner. Never hurts to ask.

HI:

I would ask Tiffany--all they can say is no. FWIW, I bought Tiffany studs decades ago and they had the screw backs. I took them in for resetting and they did without hesitation. I no longer had my receipts.

cheers--Sharon

Also, Tiffany has prescribed proportions for their three stone rings. I think your studs would have to be .50ish each to fit their requirements.

How would they know not original owner?

If the stones have inscriptions on the girdles they will know. They may require documentation.

So my Tiffany is a 1.37 G for reference. They quoted me either 16k or 20k ( can’t quite remember. It’s in an older thread of mine) which is absolutely absurd given the diamonds would be .6 each.

I second @rocks suggestion. Take the three and put them in a new setting with someone else. Tiffany will quote you something outrageous.

I am going to disagree about resetting in a non Tiffany setting. That totally destroys the value of the original ring. I would certainly take in the studs and ring and just say you’d like a quote on resetting them into a three stone setting. I think it’s possible there’d be no question about the studs’ origin. If that works, great!! You end up with a brand new Tiffany ring for just the cost of a new setting.

If they say no they won’t use the stones in the studs, then do let them send the current ring I n to get the quote for side stones and resetting. I would never take apart the current ring unless Tiffany was resetting. If the quote is too high, I’d keep this ring as it is and just get a new 3 stone ring.

Come back once you find out which they’ll do. If you start over with a new three stone, we can help you find the best diamonds for the new ring!

yup, yup & yup

If she keeps the original solitaire and stud mountings, she can always return the diamonds to their original mounts should she decide to sell sometime in the future. Win win.

Again, she can see if Tiffany will set her current three diamonds in a new Tiffany three stone setting. That is the least expensive option and she still will have a brand new Tiffany ring to wear. There is no better outcome than that.

She needs to find out what Tiffany has to offer first is all I am saying.

They quoted you $16-$20k to use your center stone and create a three-stone ring at Tiffany? I would not dismantle your engagement ring. Best to keep the Tiffany solitaire intact.

You could easily buy a slightly smaller f or g “ideal” diamond for the center stone and use the Tiffany earrings for the side stones. Three stone plus solitaire. Win win.

Samples under $13k for center stone. Leaves $3-$7k for a setting.
