Cost to ship to Whiteflash for repair?

Anyone have an idea what it would cost to ship a $40k ring back to Whiteflash for a prong repair? My hair keeps getting caught under a prong and it’s driving me nuts. From what I can see on their site, the repair is free but I have to pay to ship it there and I imagine that might be pricey.

Ask WF to Email you a shipping label. How long ago did you purchased the ring?

Are you in the US?

UPS allows up to $50K declared value, which is more than FedEx or USPS allows for single non-commercial shipments.

Great, thank you!

I would definitely ask WF for a FedEx label from them - even if you have to pay them for the shipping. Much safer in my opinion than shipping it yourself.

Don't do it!. The last time I shipped a $15K watch through UPS they cut open the box to be sure I had a watch inside before they insure it, plus UPS insurance is very expensive.

Agree 101% with MGR!

100% agree with having WF send you a pre-paid label. Much safer and even if it costs you $50 that is a drop in the bucket overall.

The label from Whiteflash is going to cost you less than what UPS charges to the public. Dealers have arrangements with UPS and FedEx through third parties to reduce the cost of shipping. It also reduces the problems of theft and non-delivery by keeping the contents unknown within the shipper's system. Avoid using your own declared value and label as much as possible.

Use their label and just pay them for shipping.

I' about to do the same, mine got caught it my hair so badly that I think I may have moved a prong.

$50 is cheap. Expect $40k in insurance with UPS to be double that or more. As mentioned above, FedEx won't do it at all for a consumer and USPS is still a hot mess with their covid protocols. I wouldn't use them unless you have no choice (and then use their registered service only). I second (or fifth) the suggestion of letting WF deal with it.

@lavalle218, you have been getting excellent advice. Another factor to consider; with WF providing the label, you are covered by their supplemental insurance and are not going to be trying to get UPS or USPS to honor your insurance and then going to follow up with WF if anything should happen. With the supplemental insurance that many jewelers use, the loss rate of shipped items is WAY less than 1%.

I have never lost a package using the supplemental insurance. The procedures followed are a reason why the loss rates are so low and and our costs are much lower than you would pay if you could do it yourself. It will be quicker, easier, and cheaper to use the shipping label from WF.

This is incorrect. USPS offers up to $50k insurance for Registered Mail. UPS (as far as I can see) and FedEx do not insure jewelry for individuals. Declared value is NOT insurance!

From UPS:

"UPS's liability is limited to US$100.00 on packages with no declared value. If the value of your goods exceeds US$100.00, you can declare a higher value, up to US$50,000.00 per package, by entering the declared value in the UPS shipping system used and paying an additional charge. Declared Value charges for freight collect and third-party shipments may be billed to your shipper account. For more information, refer to ups.com/terms.

When a shipper declares a value in excess of $100, it does not receive any form of insurance. Insurance for in-transit goods is available through UPS’s licensed affiliate UPS Capital Insurance Agency, Inc."

Then when you go to the page for insurance for jewelry, it offers Parcel Pro to businesses. I don't see a way for an individual to buy insurance for one jewelry shipment.

To the OP, I got a label from a vendor this year to send a diamond for resetting and paid $120 for $30k insurance from the vendor for overnight express shipping (one way) by Fed Ex.

My mistake! I thought USPS was limited to $5000, regardless of chosen shipping method.

Thank you for clarifying...and teaching me something. :)

Thank you for your gracious reply! You are correct that regular Priority Mail has a limit of $5k. I've used Registered Mail several times, and it is possibly the safest method of shipping ourselves, although it is not the fastest.

Thanks so much everyone, was able to get a label and details/instructions from the Whiteflash team today. A+ service, as always! I don’t know why I didn’t think to reach out to them first, I was just assuming I had to arrange everything on my own but they made it painless! Now to just find a day to send it in - I hate to part with this sparkle bomb :)
