I researched this site when making my purchase, so I thought I''d give back by posting my find especially there has been some discussion on Costco diamonds. Knew I was gambling a bit buying from Costco, but their return policy is pretty risk free, so I gave it a try. I ordered at Costco''s Canadian online site costco.ca and tracking the order from the beginning, my ring came from Seattle. Costco advertises 1ct, VS2, color I minimum, no cut information. This is what I got based on the GIA grading report that came with the ring.
Square Brilliant Modified: 5.72 x 5.53 x 4.00mm
Carat Weight: 1.03 carat
Color: I
Clarity: VS1
Total Depth: 72.3%
Table Size: 75%
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Thick
Culet: None
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Excellent
Flourescence: None
I took it for an appraisal at Harold Weinstein as recommended by many on this site for Toronto. I paid $4,999.99 Canadian (shipping included but taxes extra) and the appraisal came back $11,000. I learned from this site that appraisals can be on the higher end due to different factors, but even if you discount it by 20%, the ring is still very good value. Harold Weinstein also appraised on the cut which was not something that GIA grades on for fancy cuts. I know it''s most likely not based on the AGA standard but the diamond got rated as Very Good in cut. Table to Depth ratio is not what most experts would recommend on this site, but I''m still pretty happy with the sparkles I get in this ring.
The only thing that leaves a bit to be desired is the ring itself. You can see the rough edges under the trellis and can tell the mould wasn''t very fine and the workmanship is not the best. I guess you can''t ask for too much in a Costco ring, it is definitely not Tiffany where their Lucida setting is all smooth and polished in places where you can''t even see. However, the setting itself is very good, secure and level.
I was hoping my ring would be color H at least, but given the extra weight, higher clarity, excellent symmetry and very good polish (plus Harold Weinstein''s very good cut), I am very happy with my purchase. I''m not even concerned about the slightly thick to thick girdle since I know (thanks to this site again) that princess tends to chip in the corners and given the exposed sides in this setting, a thicker girdle probably is a good thing providing extra protection to damage.
I will post a few more pictures below.
