Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some advice on a stone I bought from Good Old Gold. It's this 1.56 carat OEC: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9724

This is the first diamond I've ever bought and I've been pretty overwhelmed by all the different factors you need to take into account. Well, somehow it didn't dawn on me until after I bought it that it is very shallow. I got some pictures of the diamond on the hand but I didn't think to ask for pictures of the profile, and a video to show how the facets sparkle which looked pretty to me. Video's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtLt530oD_I

I feel a little dumb for not realizing it's shallow until just now. I was going to have it sent straight from GOG to Mark Morrell to have it set in a Petite Torchiere (which was just paid for today), but now I've got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach that I made a mistake buying this stone. I'm worried now that it might be too late since I already paid Mark for the setting. Have I made a huge mistake? :(sad

It is a different look and not something I would want for an engagement ring. Are you the guy and you picked this out for
your GF? Not only is it shallow it has a really large table. Doesnt GOG have something else that would be a little nicer that
would fit in your budget?

Edit - what is the stone budget? Why dont your get an AVR or AVC?

Here is a lovely L

An N for $10.5k

Hmm, how shallow is shallow? (EDIT just saw the link to the diamond) Take a deep breath and relax. There's no need to panic!

Worst case, I'm sure you could return the stone and get a different one, and also Mark would probably not have an issue with changing the setting or modifying it.

The first thing to do is figure out what you want - in a perfect ideal situation what would you like to happen? Then work backwards from there!

Depth 51.4%
Table 63.9%

It does look pretty sparkly in the video. But in different lighting situations I'm not sure how its going to do.

I think the table bothers me more than the depth.

Plus it has a really flat crown. Not your typical OEC.

Hi, thanks for replying. It's actually for an anniversary engagement ring upgrade. My budget isn't the biggest; I was hoping to stay in the neighborhood of $6,000 or under (edit to say I might be able to raise my budget a tiny bit for the right stone). I really love old cuts and I was open to an AVR if I couldn't find a genuine OEC, but there weren't any on the site that fit into my budget and parameters.

In an ideal situation I was hoping to find an OEC no lower than VS2 (or an eye clean SI1), hopefully 1.3 carats at the very least and a well cut stone. I am not picky about color, in fact I love warmth in old cuts. I did see that there's a pretty S colored OEC on the site, but I'm not sure going that low on the color spectrum would be a good idea since it will be set in platinum.

Again thanks for replying. I feel a bit better already. :)

The faceting pattern on this one is just lovely. Can you ask them to do a video for you with the one you bought and this
one so you can see the difference in color and faceting pattern. Does the large table on the one you bought bother you or no?
The large table and low crown just kill it for me but thats me. How do you feel about its look?

To be honest I didn't even realize the table was big until you pointed it out and it would bother me. The only thing that's giving me reservations about the S colored OEC is how it will look set in platinum since it's so warm.

I thought I'd post a little update. I was able to see a video of the stone I bought next to the 1.43 carat S diamond. The facets in the S are gorgeous and it is definitely cut a lot more like your typical OEC. The color didn't look too far off from the M colored stone in the video but I was still a little hesitant, so I scoured the internet looking for warm diamonds. What pushed me over the edge was GemFever's OEC named Audrey. I loved how creamy the warmer old cuts look, so I exchanged for the S. Tomorrow it will be on its way to Mark Morrell to be set into a Petite Torchiere! I will share pictures when I get it! Thank you to everyone who gave me advice.
