Hi ladies,

My boyfriend bought a cushion cut ring to purpose and I have not seen it. I had asked him recently about the measurement of the ring because I’m curious about the coverage on my finger.

He said it’s 8.8x8.8 2.98ct. I don’t remember exactly the size of my ring finger but I think it’s either 4.5 or 4.75. Does anyone know if that measurement runs too big or too small for a 2.98ct ?

I think a 2.98ct square cushion should be closer to around 8.0x8.0 to 8.2x8.2, depending on the overall depth.

How many carats would you say a 8.8x8.8 is ?

Thank you. Would you say this site is accurate ?
Unfortunately I am not an expert on this. I noticed others using the site on the forum so I started using it. Maybe someone else can chime in on it. I’m sorry I can’t be more help.

Here's the diamond dimensions on a 4.5 finger. I think this site is considered accurate, it seems to be mathematically based. Seems like the depth is 58%, which is a bit shallow for a cushion, which is why it's facing up a bit bigger.

I think you mentioned in another thread that your ring is a Harry Winston? It should be a nice diamond in such a high-end ring. eta, my screen shot is showing up as a thumbnail, can't change it but it should enlarge if you click on it.

Ah I’m kinda stressing. Isn’t it considered bad when it’s shallow

I wouldn’t worry. These fancy shapes are really subjective and people prefer different things. The rounds are more set in terms of what dimensions are best from what I understand. I have a shallower oval but I really like it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what one person likes another may not, particularly with non round shaped stones. :)
Your stone is going to be amazing I’m sure! I’m the size alone will be amazing!

@Yourfavgirl, I agree with @Diamond_14, please don't stress! You don't go by the numbers as much with these fancy shapes and I really think it's going to be a pretty diamond. And it will look big for its carat weight!

Thank you for the reassurances ladies!!

I love ovals!! Since yours is shallow also do you notice it not being as brilliant or doesn’t reflect back as much as a non shallow oval cut ?

I feel like my oval has plenty of brilliance. It also can blind me sometimes with the fire haha :)
I would say not as much fire as a round but that is to be expected in general since rounds typically have the big fire compared to other shapes. I like fancy shapes though and they have their own perks and personality. Also my oval is more of a crushed ice look so I get lots of small scintillating flashes.

I have gotten several compliments from jewelers on my stone too when I go to shop for my wedding band. :)

I think your Diamond will be beautiful! I’m hoping you’ll share photos/videos once you get it!

You’re making me feel better about my ring. I will post pictures when my time comes! Haha

@Yourfavgirl Definitely don't stress. This is a super exciting time! Plus, maybe he accidentally gave you the wrong depth. My rose cut is around 3mm, so I wonder if he just was confused. Or maybe it's a gorgeous cushion rose, similar to Jen Aniston's? Idk, but I'm excited to see it! HW certainly has amazing jewels!

I forgot to ask, why doesn’t fancy shapes go by numbers but round cut does ?

@Yourfavgirl, I am just a hobbyist and not an expert so I don't know for sure but fancy shapes are more complex than rounds and that might be part of it. I do know from my time on PS that rounds are the easiest shape to determine optimal light performance because there are specific numbers you can go by to find a well cut stone. It could be due to the symmetrical nature of the round shape but again that's just a guess. Any info from an expert on this is welcome!

I don't want to give the impression that numbers are unimportant in fancy cuts. There are certain guidelines for all shapes. Any shape that falls too far off these guidelines could have performance issues. An example would be a pronounced bow tie in an oval. There just seems to be more leeway in fancy shapes as far as numbers go and the visual appearance of the stone comes more into play. There is a tool called an ASET that can be used to determine how well a fancy shape performs. I believe AGS gives a cut grade to princess cut stones. And there are branded diamonds such as Elyque ovals that are cut for optimal light performance.

My short also hobbyist answer is that is just how fancies are. You need to see it IRL to decide if you like it. An ASET image is very helpful, but also, an image. Does the stone have a return period?

I’m not really sure what the return policy at HW is but it’s too late now because he purchased it a while ago. I have not seen it in person nor do I have any pictures of it. I will post pictures when it’s on my finger

Great. Looking forward to seeing it. Didn't realize it is from HW. I'm sure it will be beautiful.
