I found these really cute wood letters at Michael''s and decided to get them to make a sign for my sangria station. I painted them in a Burgundy color and also bought some gold and tan color acrylic paint. I thought maybe I could do some type of gold border?

The Sangria station will be outside in the courtyard while they play the Flamenco/Gypsy Kings type of music during the cocktail hour. I want to do something so the sign is standing up, but I''m not sure what would look better?. Should I glue them on a piece of wood and have the whole thing standing up?. Or maybe just glue the bottom of the letters to the wood base so that they are kind of "standing up on the table".

What other options do I have?. I could just lay them flat on the table but I don''t think I love that idea.

here you can see the thickness of the letters...

hmmm... another crafter''s challenge. i''m not getting much done at work anyway, i suppose. this is so cute, btw!

option 1: drill holes in the top of each and use ribbon or fishing line to hang them either (a) from another string or piece of fabric that you can attach to the table like a garland or (b) from a strip of wood, sortof like a marionette. they don''t have to hang down far

option 2: get a piece of wood and have the hardware store people use a router to make a trough that is the same size as the thickness of the letters; then you can use wood glue to secure the letters so they stand up and the bottoms are kept in place in the trough in the wood.

option 3: get a board large enough for all the letters to fit on and nail another board at right angles at the bottom to make an L shape so it stands up (you may still need to put a weight on the back for it to stay up -- it would be better if you could miter the edges so they make an acute angle -- it would stand up better that way).

Aren''t they cute!?

And they were less than a $1 each, so it''s a budget-friendly crafty project! hehe

I love option 1! Not sure how to do it, but I love the ribbons idea, that way I could get some like organza gold ribbons to dress it up or something.

I love option 2 also!!!....I would want to keep the sign so we can keep it as a "memory" for the bar in the game room in the house!

another option with no drilling requried -- try getting some eye hooks to screw into the top of each letter. then you can do the same on a strip of wood and connect w/ ribbon. a hardware store or even the hardware dept of kmart usually have eye hooks in various sizes. those will just screw in -- just be gentle so it doesn''t split the wood.

ooooooh, here''s what I envisioned:

Get a wood board and some wire thick enough to support the weight of the letters. Drill holes in the wood and the bottom of the letters so that the letters stand up on the wire like a signpost. Then you can have the letters staggered in height, standing in a curved line, angled slightly....you name it. I think it''d be really fun looking and wouldn''t be too difficult. A drop of glue in the holes would keep it all together. Leave the glue out and you can take it apart to transport it more easily. If you don''t have a drill, ask your friends (or consider buying one! I LOVE my power drill

). You would only need to borrow it for 30 minutes or so!

I''m kind of lost on this one. Then where do I place the strip of wood so it stands up straight? Wine bottles......uhh...that''s not a bad idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That''s an awesome idea too!!!!!!!!!!! I don''t know if the letters are think enoguh for drilling though (I own a power drill too, a small-girly one, but I do have one!)

I bought an extra letter to be able to experiment on.

Thank you guys!

This wine bottle thing got me thinking. Would it look horrible if I actually glued them somehow to the cork of 7 bottles?. hmmm...I don''t know how that would look, but my wheels are turning afetr reading your ideas!!

I just grabbed a bottle and placed it on the top to see the size in relation to the letters...

Ok.....this is proof I have too much time on my hands, but let me first say that I''ve been teaching myself Adobe Illustrator from a book and I just HAD to play with this

For some reason it didn''t like the JPG exported from illustrator.... file was plenty small.....seems like opening and saving it in paintbrush made it work, though!

hehe...this is fun!.

How about the hook idea, with the bottle idea? something like this (I''m just using paint so forgive the 5-year old lines...hehe)

Hmmm, I like the suspended letters idea w/ the wine bottles, but the letters might actually be too big for that. What if the letters were just propped up against wine bottles? Also, how much table space do you think you''ll have? If that might be an issue, what about spelling it vertically, with the letters attached to a post stuck into a big wine jug or something sitting on the ground?

Hmm...I had not even thought about doing it vertically. Not sure that would be too stable though.

There is plenty of space since it''s a whole table just for Sangria

I''ll have my FI help me experiment this weekend

Oooh very cute!! I had a ton of words (each made up of 3" tall individual silver letters) that I''d ordered from Target and used all throughout the reception... "LOVE" by the cardbox, "ALWAYS" by the guestbook, "LAUGH" with the placecards, "XOXO" in the bathroom, "KISS" by the cake and "SWEET" on the candy buffet. They were all standing up, and they ended up looking really nice in the pictures... just added a fun little 3D element to everything. So if you come up with a way to stand them on end, I think it could be really cute!!
