I'm a CAD newbie, so I'm looking to harness the collective expertise of PS as I finalize my engagement ring design. S/O to @lulu_ma and @Cerulean for being my jewelry sounding boards/therapists thus far.

The vision for my setting:
  • Bezel-set - for lifestyle + to protect the girdle (extremely thin)
  • Scalloped basket with a medium/large connection to the finger (I like ring gaps)
  • Soft, knife-edge shank that becomes a more standard comfort-fit band on the sides and at the base of the shank for comfort/spin reduction
The diamond:

(TY, @KristyDarling - your ring will always be one of my favs)

The CAD:
Caveat - CAD didn't like the shape of my stone, so the bezel fit looks wonky. It won't be like that IRL.

My feedback:
Here are some benign pieces of feedback I'll be passing on that will impact the cast:
  • Scallop balls - delete
  • Base of ring shank - thicken for better durability. 1.4mm is thin + it will be thinned further with the comfort fit
  • Comfort fit - soften the interior of the shank (would prefer to see this in the CAD since it impacts sizing)
  • Bezel - side profile looks quite wide, I’d love to see more of the diamond so long as it doesn't impact the structural integrity.
    • PastedGraphic-2.png
Other feedback that I presume will be more relevant during the filing/polishing stage:
  • Basket base - soften/round out the bottom of the basket for comfort and better harmony with the bezel
  • Knife edge - soften on the sides where the rings hit my other fingers for comfort
More contentious points I'd like to direct PSer feedback toward:
  • Scallops - does it bother you that they’re not the same size of swoops since the L is 2 scallops and the W is 1? I liked the CAD design in theory because it provides a better view of the diamond from my POV. Now, I'm thinking we may be better off with more symmetry between L and W given that I won't see much of the diamond anyway. I find it to be noticeable from this angle:
    • PastedGraphic-3.png
  • Basket taper - The base of the basket is quite wide. Will this be uncomfortable?

Excited to hear your thoughts + any other feedback you'd like to share.

Also, I feel a bit sheepish posting this in RockyTalky... does anyone else feel like we need a separate forum for discussing setting designs? I feel like we have two distinct audiences at play here. I digress!

The base of the basket looks to thick to my eye. I wonder if the designer can make the bottom a little contoured for comfort, too.

Just curious.
If the CAD program doesn’t ‘like’ the shape of your stone - how is the CAD being utilized to fabricate your setting?
There’s a few different ways - I believe?

Knowing that would shape how I looked at a CAD and how/what I would change.

Beautiful stone!!

Who is your vendor for this project? It strikes me that for a forever engagement ring, some of your inspiration pics are triwire and your cad won't have that feel. Are you okay with the more solid band? And if so, it's coming along but I would like to see about the cathedral (or lack there of while there are some details like that on your inspo pics)/shoulders---they look a little thick to me.

Thank you all for writing in!

@lulu_ma - great pointer, thank you!

@Rfisher, that's an excellent q - I'll pass it on. My guess is that the bezel will be hammered and filed so that it wraps around the diamond perfectly. What drew me to this stone is how pillowy it is; I love that it's not rounded anywhere other than the corners. Assuming this vision plays out, what feedback do you have?

@Grymera, I'm working with a local jeweller in Canada (and I'd rather not disclose the name). I'm OK with not having a tri-wire ring; I think casting a tri-wire would yield meh results. Better suited IMO for hand-forged. I have a RHR with a scalloped basket that has a nice, subtle knife edge/cathedral that I showed her for inspo (see below).

I'm not looking for an open cathedral; I like how she integrated the knife edge with the scallop. I do think it looks a big heavy but I'm hoping that will change once filed.

@klrrrr Understood. And yes, I agree, a triwire is best suited for hand forged designs. If you're happy with the vendor you've selected and the final product then the CADS look like they're on the right track. For the scallops, personally I'd keep it because the rest of the base has more metal, and it will allow light to get in. But it feels like you prefer the double swoop per your inspo shots.

Can't wait to see the finished ring!

Oh this is going to be a beautiful ring!! It looks great even in Barney purple ha! The diamond is the perfect size for your hand too. Looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

Great looking diamond and style of setting! Looking forward to the final product. I also have a peruzzi of 1 CT waiting to be set. 8)

Made some tweaks and printed the CAD! Can't wait to see it in non-Barney form. Please ignore off-kilter, smudged diamond distractions.
