i would like to get FI a nice pair of cufflinks as wedding gift. i was going to get platinum but i see that not many are made of PLAT. any take on whether it is better to get WG vs PLAT?

i checked nordstroms, blue nile and tiffanys online so far but didn't see anything. i will also check bloomingdales and some other stores in person. i'd prefer to get antique ones but FI isn't into preowned

criteria :

1) clean simple style / lines - i think some onyx might be ok but no diamonds or other gems

2) $500 - $1000 : it seems that most are around $100 ( i saw a few that are around $200 but they were too ornate ) but i kind of want to get something a bit more expensive if that makes sense. but if under $500 is the going price for nice cufflinks then i'll be ok with getting less expensive ones

any suggestions? thanks!

In San Francisco, you could get customized cuff links with his initials at the gift center, I don''t know how much they cost, but I think it will be under $100. I am thinking of doing that for the groomsmen as wedding party gifts. Cost permitting of course.

thanks qtn! that is a great idea :)

i did a search in the PS search bar and of course came up with a bunch of threads (i had originally typed in : platinum cufflinks and didn't get any leads but after i posted i typed in cufflinks and a ton popped up.

i am considering jcrow's idea (jcrow - hope you don't mind me stealing your idea!). her idea reminded of something - i am culturally irish and when i went home for the holidays i was asking my family what sorts of irish wedding traditions they knew of b/c i'd like to incorporate a few into the wedding. my aunt mentioned the sixpence in the shoe so it would be nice if we both had sixpence!

here's the link (sixpence is third from the bottom) :
six pence cufflinks

btw this site has tons of cufflinks - a really nice selection

oh my ... i love this site. i found two pairs cufflinks and i think i will get both. i am irish and korean so i think am going to get the six pence to represent the irish part of moi and this modern one made by a korean artist (plus the artist is located locally in palo alto)

here is the korean one

(World renowned for his industrial design and winner of numerous awards worldwide, Young Se Kim promotes to the world the potential of Korean design through his fashion brand INNO, as well as through his multinational design consulting organization INNO-DESIGN based in Palo Alto, CA & Seol South Korea. Each cufflink is enamel on sterling silver plate and bears Young Se Kims name stamped into the reverse of each cufflink. Gift boxed with historical information card.)

here is the six pence one

(Regarded as a "lucky" coin, the six pence was often
placed in a brides shoe on her wedding day. Discontinued from circulation in 1967, the sixpence continued in use for some time after decimalization in 1971. It was especially useful for parking meters, but inflation and a lack of encouragement in its use led to it being finally demonetized in June 1980. Coin features Queen Elizabeth II on the face, and a garland with rose, thistle and shamrock on the reverse. Packaged in a Ian Flaherty of London signature aluminum gift box)

this one is pretty cool
(located around middle of the page) it's made with meteorite!!??

Encased within these solid sterling silver cufflinks is a cross section of an actual meteor which has the appearance and texture of metallic stone! A highly unusual pair of cufflinks, but it makes a strangely beautiful (and celestial) pair unlike traditional gemstones! Solid sterling silver setting. Slightly smaller than a quarter. Packaged in a beautiful lacquered hardwood gift box.

ETA : they are having 25% off sale until jan 7

D wants the Frank Gehry one''s from Tiffanys-the fish ones. He always loved the fish building in Barcelona and when we got engaged there, he made sure that we had our photo taken in front of it.

www.tiffany.com has some really nice cuff links as does Louis Vuitton.

thanks bee* and mintve for your suggestions!

Hi Ringster,

I think most cufflinks are made in sterling silver... have never actually seen them offered in platinum...I would think that would be alot of $$ considering how often they actually wear them....

I got these cufflinks from Tiffany for my DH and for my dad, which I gave them on my wedding day as a gift. I had them hand-engraved with their monograms at T&CO, and they came out beautifully. They are very classic looking, and I think I paid a little over $200 for each pair (including the engraving).

haha you can scrap my suggestion now-he''s decided that he doesn''t want cufflinks anymore

. They were going to be part of his wedding present and now he''s told me that he''d prefer to get something else so I''m back to the drawing board again.Men!

You can often find plat cufflinks of vintage Art Deco era...Have you called around to Lang''s and other places? I''ve seen them around but they are usually in the $1000-2500 range.

I''ve bought FI three sets of antique gold cufflinks on the UK ebay.

1st set were 1874 15k white gold with flower and leaf engravings. Cost £75

2nd set were 1910 18k yellow gold (8g total weight) plain ovals. Cost £39

3rd set were 1896 15k rose gold plain ovals. Cost £28

At the moment I have two other sets in a drawer - 1904 15k rose gold ovals (£15) and 10k yellow gold concave ovals (no date and being 10k they would be american as no-one else has 10k gold) for £26.

I''m having a set hand-engraved with our monogram that I designed as a wedding gift, but can''t decide which set to use (rose gold are a bit too curved, and not sure about the concave ones working with the design) so I may buy another pair.

I''m also using ebay to track down a 1908 silver sixpence for my shoe!

ladies thanks for all your input! i went ahead and ordered the two above (sixpence and korean design) from cuffarts. i'll let you know how it turns out.

Dani - thanks - yeah i am realizing that the cufflinks are not that expensive. the tiffany ones are very nice classy and great keepsake.

bee* - i know ... men...they are always changing their minds! :P whaddya gonna do!!

surfgirl - if these ones from cuffarts don't work out then i'll take a look on ebay. looks like they have some good stuff on there

pandora ii - your FI's cufflinks sound lovely. lucky guy to have a girl with such good taste! so another recommendation for ebay!

i got the cufflinks today!

my take :

1) the sixpence ones look really nice. the aluminum gift box they come in is also very nice - has a good weight to it and is velvety. i''m really happy with this purchase and think it is worthy of a wedding gift for FI

2) the Young Se Kim - the cufflinks are nice but i have to say the packaging is kind of tacky. the cufflinks are smaller in diameter than the sixpence. but i like the design.

however, they really could have improved on the packaging for the YSK cufflinks. the box is black cardboard which is ok looking but when you open the box the cufflinks are attached to a piece of cardboard which also isn''t bad but then they wrapped the cufflinks and attached cardboard in sealed plastic and on the back of the plastic package it has a cheapy looking "made in china" label. there is supposed to be an historical insert but really it is just some info about mr young and his mug where he has a big cheesy grin. so i''m very glad i got this item discounted.

overall - i am very happy with the purchase. i would recommend that you call them and ask them what kind of packaging the cufflinks come in if you are giving the cufflinks as a gift.

i''m going to get a sixpence for my shoe that matches the date on FI sixpence cufflinks

thanks again jcrow for posting about your sixpence cufflink gift idea!

if anyone down the road is looking for cufflinks, i know that tiffanys.com, davidyurman.com, most high end department stores like barneys.com all have great ones that i wear.
