I have naturally wavy, stringy, frizzy, thin hair. When I was younger and cuter I had Shirley Temple type ringlets but not any more. My hair looks terrible unless I pretty much touch every piece of it with a curling iron or a straightening iron. Granted, I''ve learned to make it look mostly ok and the truly bad hair days aren''t as frequent. But I''d really like to get away from the heat products because my hair is also dyed ...both base color and highlights.

So, in my research to do something with my curly hair I found a website all about handling curly hair in a different way:
There is a different way to cut curly hair called "carve & slice" that takes out the bulk but preserves the curl. Read about it here:

http://www.ouidad.com/curl_central/c-and-s.asp

Has anyone heard anything about the ouidad "carve & slice" cut? There are very few salons in the US that do this but I''m going to be close to one in Scottsdale Arizona while on vacation in April. I''m considering giving this new cut style a try.

I’ve spent some time on the Ouidad website as well. I live in Iowa so there are not any options close to me. If they had a salon in Chicago, I’d go in a heartbeat! I think I have had similar haircuts though. I’ve learned that I need some layers to give me enough volume throughout my hair. Otherwise the top of my hair lays flat and all the curl is in the bottom half. I’ve also had shorter layers away from my face (sides and back, but front layers long enough to pull back)

I’ve also learned it’s all about product and drying technique. I diffuse my hair and try not to touch it while drying. But, I usually end up adding more product to the roots to get some lift and then spritz with more water and diffuse the top layers again when I want more curl definition.

Please keep us posted! I’m so intrigued by the idea of going to an Ouidad salon. Have you tried any of their products?

There was another poster here back before Christmas that brought up the subject. I went to the website and entered my contact info. Got a brochure and catalog of sorts of their products. What I read made me realize one specific point...curly hair is always drier than other kind. Their products boast adding or returning moisture back into your curl as it is what makes us frizz.

SO one day...instead of washing out my conditioner...I left it in. I just knew I was going to be all greasy all day. Not the case. I had my ringlets back and no frizz and it was actually very soft to touch. So I was grateful that they pointed out an element I had overlooked. Future when I want to be curly...I won''t rinse.

The next time I was in my Aveda salon for a cut...I asked her about this technique...and she said it is really fabulous for those who have a lot of hair. She expressed in animation how we curly haired types have a rounded halo of hair and this patented cut lessens the halo and makes the curl lay in a more attractive NON 70''s round ball. Of course I took what she said with a grain of salt. She is never going to convince me to attend another salon for a cut when I am paying her $60 for hers.

She said the carve and slice wouldn''t be right for me as I don''t have the volume of hair it works best on. I came back and looked at the brochure and website, and sure enough there weren''t many follically challenged as I. So in my particular case, again it isn''t right for me...thinning where I need the most volume isn''t a good idea.

I would hate for you to charter a plane and make an appointment only to learn what I did. So this may not apply to you if you have been richly blessed and have a ton of curls...good luck! (I realize you were asking for experience specifically I hope you don''t mind me sharing my info.)

Great! I can''t wait to hear ... and maybe see

how it turns out for you.
I''ve heard nothing but good things about Ouidad but haven''t been able to try their products or attend one of their salons as of yet.

I''m intrigued by it.... they don''t get very specific about it on the website... Do they just layer it? or cut it on angles? or did they develop a "special" tool to cut with?? I''ve been fighting my natuarl curly hair all my life so I''m curious about it as well. They look a bit pricey to me but if it works it would be priceless. There''s not a salon near me so I guess it doesn''t matter.

I have to wash my hair at night, then let it air dry a couple hours before I go to bed, then pull it into a high ponytail before bed. In the morning, I can just let it down, spray and crunch, it''s usually pretty dry. If I use a blowdryer or even a diffuser, it gets frizzy.

I really like the BedHead Tigi Control Freak serum, it''s smooths and has a little gel control in it (w/out turning your hair hard).

I think I'm going to have to go read about this...I've got frizzy fairly wavy hair that when it's shorter it's more curly and when it's longer its straighter, but it's really really thin and fine. And I have hypothyroidism with added bonus of having about twice as much hair fall out everyday than is normal

. So I'm really nitpicky about my hair, because it looks awful unless I curl it or straighten it, both of which takes plenty of extra effort and time that I just don't have...But this interests me for sure.

Hmmm....very interesting! My hair is naturally wavy, but I often just use the straightener on it. Although I used to leave it wavy and use Salon Selectives curl defining mousse. It was the best. but they''ve stopped making it, so now I''m just back to the straightener all the time

I''ve been curious about this too. I''ll be in Phoenix in April, but DH convinced me that a haircut is not an effective use of our vacation time

.

I have plenty of hair but it really doesn''t all curl the same way, or to the same extent. It''s like each hair has it''s own agenda. I''d love to keep it soft and curly, but most of the time it ends up tied back or blown straight. And now it''s satarting to fade from a lovley dark dark dark bown to just brown and silver

Ok. Personal hair crisis threadjack over.

Anyway, I guess I don''t have any helpful info to impart, but please let us know if you call them or decide to get it done!

Shiney thingy that opens portals- Does the brochure have before and afters of the carve and slice cut? That would be cool to see.

I have heard of Ouidad, and use some of their products. They work well overall.
