Can anyone help me find a place that will provide me with custom cut sapphires? I am having my engagement ring made, and I thought I would be able to keep cost down a little by searching them out. Here is a photo of the ring. Thanks so much to anyone that can help....

Can I ask why you are having that custom made? Is there somewhere you can buy it already made? I would think the cost would be prohibitive to having it made custom. Stones custom cut like that for a setting will be very very pricey. And there probably isn't a ton of value in going synthetic...the large cost will be due to the cutting probably not the stones themselves.

Thank you for your quick response. As for purchasing this ring, it is no longer sold. In addition I have found a casting house that will cast and set it for me substantially less than for what it was originally listed for. They told me in their quote that they would charge an additional fee to locate the gemstones. So I thought I might be able to find a distributer. I also care more about the look of the ring then the actual quality of the gemstones (please don''t hate, haha). I thought if their was a chance to keep cost down, synthetic may be a good alternative.....
On another note, I think I saw you in the forum about the gemshow in chicago. If I was correct, is that a good place to locate a loose diamond. My boyfriend and I are going up for memorial day weekend, we were planning on shopping on Wabash.

Have a look on the M. Khordipour website; http://www.estatediamondjewelry.com/index.cfm

If you go to the engagement rings section, flip through. There are a few in there that are VERY similar to what you are looking for.

Khordipour will do custom as well, so if you see something you like but want a few changes, they can work with it.

Don''t let the pricing scare you off: the range of $$ on this website is mind-altering. The product line is very broad.

NO. A loose diamond is a big purchase, not to be made at a gem show. You'll want to contact one of the PS vendors for the best stones and the best bang for your buck. Looks like you want a cushion, so Mark at Engagement Rings Direct in New York would be my choice. He also does great settings.

And really, I would probably just let the company source what they need. It'll be MUCH easier than trying to have too many hands in the pot.

I would agree on this point -- gem shows are not great venues for buying diamonds. They may be useful for finding unusual stones and collector items, but you most likely won''t find savings on high-demand items. That being said, if the Chicago show is focused on jewelery, as opposed to gems & minerals, it would be a great place to shop styles, sizes, colors, etc. Be careful though, it''s easy to fall in love with things you never intended to buy! (trust me, I know...)

With respect to a custom cut sapphire, or any custom cut stone for that matter, you should keep in mind that the prices will reflect the value of the stone *and* the cost of custom cutting. Most colored stones are faceted as inexpensively as possible in large cutting shops over in the Far East or South America. Usually, those cutting houses are more interested in bottom-line daily production by weight than the beauty of the stone. The stones they produce are commercially passable, but not much else. In these cases, the cost of cutting is almost nil.

On the other hand, custom gemstone cutters, at least the ones I am familiar with, are more interested in the beauty of the stone than how fast they can get it out of the shop. Quality cutting takes time and great skill. Don''t look to custom cutters to save money on a gemstone. Rather, look to them for substantially higher quality cutting and thus a much more attractive gemstone.

save yourself time and trouble: let them source the stones.
