Hi folks-it seems that my future daughter in-law has volunteered me as the go between with her and my son concerning her engagement ring. Her dream engagement ring is a copy of her grandmother's ring. She would like to change the emerald to a diamond and the ring from gold to white gold or platinum. I'm turning to y'all for some advice or even your opinion on this ring.

1. Who would you use to make this ring? I see David Klass name tossed around some.

2. Can it be recreated from pictures?

3. Is it better to source your own diamond or use one from the jeweler? If source your own, what supplier would you use for this diamond?

4. Estimated build cost? Would a $5000-$8000 seem adequate?

5. What size diamond would work in this ring?

6. How would you incorporate the wedding band?

7. Anything else I missed?

Thanks for the help.

How beautiful and sweet!

May I ask, if the budget is inclusive of a stone?

No matter what, I recommend a much smaller stone and scaling down the ring for daily wear. This style would also be very difficult to pair unless it is curved to fit the ring. Curved wedding bands can annoy some, as they can go out of alignment. These are just things to consider.

David Klass could do a great job recreating the ring as-is.

If she wants a creative interpretation, maybe someone like CVB Designs.

People here can help you find a lovely stone!

The budget of $5-8,000 is the total budget for ring and stone.

Hi, I’m not exactly sure but the stone looks to be around 12 x 9 mm. That is the equivalent of a ~5.34-6 carat diamond. Here’s a chart that give you approximate carat weight for dimensions.

Would your future dil consider a pale colored stone like an aquamarine?

Does it have to match in size? Even a lab created emerald of that size is going to run $7k plus. It’s a pretty ring, but expectations and budget may not be aligned.

does this engagement ring have to be an exact replica of her grandmother's ring?

David Klass on average charges around from $1,000-2,000 for his rings depending on the preferred metal/complexity. I wouldn't go with CvB, she is hard to get ahold of and is much more expensive.

David can make a very similar ring, but it would have to be at a much smaller scale.

I would not go with a lab grown diamond or aquamarine unless you know your future DIL is actually open to it

So if you take 8K (minus ~ 2k for the setting) you have about 6K to buy a diamond
If you decide to go with an emerald cut.... personally wouldn't go below H in color because emeralds show color more than other stones (unless you know that she is not color sensitive)

I did a quick search on Blue Nile and you can get 1.2ct which is ~ 7.5x5.5mm stone... with the metal halo it would look much more substantial

A center diamond of that size would be far over your budget. You could try moissy or perhaps a smaller diamond center stone with a halo around it. It is a beautiful ring, and I could see why she would want one of her own. DK could totally do something like this.

Yea David is a better fit. CVB I would’ve only recommended if that budget didn’t include the stone.

Everyone gave great advice.

Stones like synthetic emerald and aquamarine are very soft and not suitable for daily wear. Unless this ring will only be worn on occasion I’d say stick with diamond or sapphire.

definitely find out if the wearer understands that it really should be scaled down for practicality and budget. It’s a gorgeous ring but at its current scale looks more like a cocktail ring due to size. Usually rings this scale aren’t going to be very comfortable or practical to wear all the time, and an emerald this size would cost an arm and a leg

hope this is helpful

Thanks for the replies. After looking at the size, you all are correct, it needs to be scaled down. I don't think it has to match 100%, she just loves the look/style of it.
Something like newdiamondworld posted below is probably the best route to look into.

I would ask DIL if she is ok with a curved wedding band or wants a flat/flush-fit. If she really wants a flush fit, there will need to be some changes to the design..

How important to her is that the center stone is green? Sapphire would give her the color and they are pretty tough, but they are more subject to damage than a diamond. Two links below just to show you that you can get lovely greens in sapphires. They will have more sparkle than an emerald, but less than a diamond. I'm partial to Montana Sapphires, but there are many that are lovely. There is a Colored Stone Board here on PS that can help you.

There are also lab -created sapphires.

You could find a green diamond and lab diamond would be less expensive, but I honestly don't know about price or even availability. I'd check with Diamonds by Lauren. She'd have to be ok with a size decrease though. https://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/categories/lab-grown-diamonds

For making the ring, I'd also recommend David Klass. He can work from pictures, but I would - personally - send it to him since a close copy is important to her. I insured my rings through Jewelers Mutual before I mailed them to DK.. But, find the stone first...then look at who can make it.

One final note...The ring you showed above is a lovely antique ring. Really. But, it also has been worn and loved. Many of the details in the ring have been lost, which is totally normal. So, I'd personally ask for a close replica but with some ideas about how to get back to its crisper beginnings. A ring like this often had engraving. With careful study, you might find remnants of that to guide the design. DK has a very good engraver.

@rockysalamander She wants a diamond, not a green stone. See her #3 and #5 on the original post.

Has your future DIL had the opportunity to view many emerald-shaped diamonds in person, so she has an idea of what particular faceting is most (or least) appealing to her? (there's not the uniformity in this shape that you find with round brilliants, which always have 58 facets). My guess is probably not, because emerald-shaped diamonds aren't nearly as plentiful in brick-and-mortar shops as round diamonds.

But even if she does not have an opinion on that, here are some great tips @tyty333 offered 2 weeks ago, in her post #6 in this thread, on what to look for in emerald-shaped diamonds:
And here's Blue Nile's very handy page of diamond shapes and sizes (in mm and approx. carat weight) that you can print off and then cut out the variously-sized shapes:
