Some of you may have seen my posts asking for opinions for a new setting for our 10 year anniversary. Originally, I had planned on simply upgrading my wife''s diamond from a rather poor .4 round to something better. I went through GOG and bought a .70 J VS2 Jubilee. When the stone arrived, I knew that the old setting needed to be ''upgraded'' too.
Keeping the new diamond a surprise, I hinted to my wife that maybe she would like a new setting with a cz in it for our anniversary. She got pretty excited, and so we went to the big box jewelers in our area so I could get an idea of what she liked. Turned out that she liked the "halo" style setting that were originally popular in the 20''s (I think). At that time, I was put off by the questionable quality and sales tactics of these jewelers. I didn''t like hearing that I''d better purchase the extended warranty for $75 because "its only a matter of time when some of the melee stones fall out". Or, "the prong to set the diamond is an additional $90 for 14kt white gold, but we recommend the platinum for $300". Or, "the additional fee for setting a fancy stone is $50". You get my point.
At this point, I realized that my original budget was going to be shattered, but I felt I could still keep it somewhat reasonable.
I had read a fair bit about Wink Jones on these forums, and liked the fact that he was only one state away. I called him, and he gave me the pros and cons of going custom.
Well, I decided to give his bench a try, and he promised me that I (and my wife) wouldn''t be disappointed. I really liked the Tiffany Legacy style, with its clean lines and elegant shape.
To make a long story short, nobody is disappointed. My wife loves the ring, and it definitely looks custom. And the best part is that none of her friends have anything even close to it.
Thought I''d brag a bit with the pictures:
