I have a question I have wondered about for a while. If a stone needs to be calibrated for a jewelry piece and I buy a stone close to that size, how easily can the stone be resized even if it is a little over size as in the depth of the stone being too deep. And what about cost is this an expensive thing to have done, maybe someone can direct me for info.
Also what about cabs can they be cut? Really feeling clueless here!!

leggs,
The cost for cutting depends, for the most part, on the time that it takes to do what you want done. Some stones, like sapphire, take a lot more time to get that superb polish than say, an amethyst of the same size. Generally you don''t need to recut a stone if the size is anywhere near to the size of the setting, (prongs can be bent a little and bezels can be opened up a bit or a filler sleeve added to make them smaller). If the stone is truly too deep, then recutting the pavilion would cost less than recutting the entire stone and could have several other effects that may be beneficial. These effects include lightening a dark stone, similarly brightening a stone whose light return was too diffuse.
Cabochons are the same way. A sapphire cab might take hours longer than an aqua cab. This is because it is much harder and getting a smoothly rounded, highly polished surface is very difficult. This is especially true for high domed cabs that have an extremely rounded surface. What size and material is your stone ?

Thanks for the reply Michael. I was just generally asking because I see so many stones thst are cut too deep for most jewelry and I wondered how easily they were cut. Your answer about the jewelry refitting most stones makes sense. Thanks
